Medieval Village on Unreal Engine 5 |
The tech demo "Slavic Village" created by Scans Factory studio has attracted the attention of players and developers with its high level of detail and realism. This demo, running on the engine Unreal Engine 5, immerses the viewer in the atmosphere of a medieval Slavic settlement and can be perceived as an example of what the world of the future game The Witcher 4 may visually become. Let's take a closer look at the demo, focusing on its elements and technical aspects.
First of all, it is worth noting the overall level of graphics. The developers from Scans Factory used the capabilities of the engine Unreal Engine 5to achieve a realistic representation of the environment. Wooden huts with thatched roofs, uneven wooden fences and carts covered in moss and dirt look alive and believable. Each object in the environment is so detailed that it seems as if it was created based on real photographs. Natural elements such as thick grass overgrown with weeds, trees with irregular branches and sunlight breaking through the foliage enhance the effect of presence.
What's particularly notable is how the demo handles materials and textures. The wood on the facades of the houses looks old, darkened in places by time and dampness. The stone elements are covered in cracks and moss, creating a sense of desolation and realism. This level of detail is achieved thanks to Nanite technology, which allows for millions of polygons to be used in a single scene without sacrificing performance. This is especially important for future games, where players expect deep immersion in the world around them.
The lighting in the demo also deserves a special mention. Engine Unreal Engine 5.4 uses the Lumen global illumination system, which allows for realistic light behavior. Light is softly diffused inside the wooden huts, creating a warm atmosphere. Outside, the sun floods the village, highlighting the surface textures. In the evening, the scene takes on a dark and mysterious look thanks to dynamic lighting changes. This approach not only improves the graphics, but also sets a certain mood, which is especially important for games where the visual component plays a key role.
The demo also shows how the engine handles weather effects. In one of the demo fragments, you can see how the village is shrouded in a light fog, adding to the mystery. The fog smoothly envelops objects, not hiding them completely, but only emphasizing the depth of the scene. The effect of rain that seeps through the trees is also done with a high degree of realism: drops of water leave traces on wooden surfaces, and small puddles collect in the lowlands.
The demo's audio enhances the visual experience. The developers used ambient sound to create the feeling of a living world: you can hear the wind, the creaking of boards as the camera moves along wooden huts, and the soft rustling of leaves. These elements create the illusion of presence, which is especially important for open-world games like The Witcher.
The creators of the demo themselves note that their work was inspired not only by Slavic culture, but also by games like The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls. The location recreates the atmosphere of a secluded settlement that could be located in the vastness of the world of The Witcher. At the same time, there is no feeling of artificiality or stereotype: each element of the scene fits organically into the overall landscape.
Beyond the visuals, Slavic Village shows potential for using its elements in future game projects. The developers suggest downloading and using the assets of this demo in your own projects, be it games, VR programs, or even short films. The set includes models of buildings, natural objects, and textures, which can greatly simplify the creation of photorealistic scenes.
One interesting feature is how the demo manages to convey atmosphere. The dark and mysterious look of the settlement, where time seems to have stopped, evokes associations with dark tales. This style is ideal for games that focus on mysticism, adventure, or folklore. For The Witcher 4, this aesthetic could be a key element in emphasizing the connection with previous parts of the series.
When viewed in the context of The Witcher 4's development, it's clear that technologies like these could dramatically change the game's visuals. Unreal Engine 5 provides tools to create deeper, more detailed open worlds than were possible with the REDengine, opening up new possibilities for storytelling and player interaction with the environment.
The Slavic Village demo shows how technology can be used to create a world that is not only beautiful but also interactive. For example, elements such as destructible objects or dynamic weather changes can add depth to a game. If CD Projekt RED integrates such technology into The Witcher 4, players will be able to explore a world that is constantly changing and reacting to their actions.
