GAME ENGINE

In November 2024, Scans Factory released their impressive demo of Rome Italian Town, built on the engine. Unreal Engine 5.4. This photorealistic tech demo impresses with its detail, careful textures and realistic visuals that immerse the viewer in the atmosphere of a Mediterranean city. Unreal Engine 5.4 once again proves that modern technologies make it possible to create digital spaces that are almost indistinguishable from real ones.

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 19 58 35 919

Key features Unreal Engine 5.4 in Rome Italian Town

The Rome Italian Town demo shows all the main technologies available in Unreal Engine 5.4, such as Nanite, Lumen, MetaSounds and other tools for creating ultra-realistic scenes. Using nanite allows you to import high-poly models without sacrificing performance. This means that every building brick, every tree, and even the smallest details look like they were just taken from a high-resolution camera. These technologies open up new possibilities for creating photorealistic cities, buildings, and interiors with fine details that were previously impossible to create in real time.

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 20 00 36 161

Visualization and processing of light with Lumen were another strong point of the demo. Thanks to Lumen, all the light in the scene behaves as in real life: rays of light refract, reflect off surfaces and create realistic shadows. At sunset, the entire city is immersed in warm tones, with each ray of light refracting and casting soft shadows. In cloudy weather, the light becomes diffused and soft, creating a completely different character of the image. The daytime scenario demonstrates the power of the engine, showing how objects and textures can change under direct sunlight.

Scale and richness of assets

Scans Factory used over 600 carefully scanned objects to create this virtual model of the city. The assets include classic building facades, which perfectly convey the architectural features of Italian houses: narrow streets, stone pavements, cozy cafes, balconies with flowers and small squares. All elements were scanned with high precision, which made it possible to achieve a perfect match with reality. The viewer can feel like a real tourist strolling along the ancient streets of Rome, where each house and each building reveals its unique charm.

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 20 00 57 728

It is worth noting the presence of such details as Italian scooters and motorcyclesparked along the streets, adding to the authenticity of the scene. These meticulously crafted scooters are part of everyday life in Italy, and their presence helps achieve the authenticity needed. Combined with effects such as light reflections and asphalt textures, this part of the assets gives the scene a finished look.

Variety of weather scenarios

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 20 01 10 653

The demo gives the user the opportunity to observe the city in different weather conditions, such as sunset, overcast и daytime. These scenarios allow you to see how the engine works with different types of lighting. Sunset lighting adds warm tones, highlights the textures of buildings and enhances the feeling of presence. Cloudy weather makes the light softer, which creates a feeling of calm and quiet coziness. During the day, the play of light and shadow created by Lumen allows you to see the city in all its glory.

Technical requirements and performance

To run the demo in high quality and at 4K resolution, we recommend a graphics card like NVIDIA RTX 4090 or similar. Only such a powerful GPU will be able to provide a consistently high frame rate (around 58 FPS) at maximum settings. The requirements are due to the fact that the scene is filled with highly detailed textures and complex assets. Using such powerful tools as Nanite and Lumen creates a huge load on the graphics card, especially when the scene is displayed in 4K resolution.

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 20 01 31 165

It is also important to note that Rome Italian Town is a demo with an empty city, without characters and additional dynamic objects. Adding them will certainly increase the system requirements, especially if the developers want to integrate interactive elements, NPCs and objects that react to user actions. Therefore, the current demo shows the graphical power of the engine, but leaves potential for further development and more complex projects.

Rome Italian Town Impressions and Prospects Unreal Engine 5.4

Rome Italian Town Shows Off Huge Potential Unreal Engine 5.4, which enables the development of photorealistic scenes with maximum detail and rich effects. The demo suggests that this engine will be able to create games with a level of realism never seen before. Epic Games and other studios can use these technologies to create vast worlds that look and feel like real ones, making the gaming experience even more immersive and exciting.

 UnrealGame Win64 Shipping 2024 11 05 20 02 36 902

This demonstration inspires new projects where attention to detail becomes the main focus. The example of the virtual reconstruction of Rome shows that the technology can be useful not only for games, but also for educational purposes, architectural visualizations, and even for creating historical reconstructions.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

In the demonstration Rome Italian Town on Unreal Engine 5.4 The differences between the minimum and maximum graphics quality settings become strikingly obvious. Every aspect from textures to lighting undergoes significant changes depending on the setting level. Let's break down how each detail of the scene changes depending on the quality level.

Detailing of objects and geometry

At minimum settings, the geometry of objects is simplified, which is especially noticeable on complex architectural elements. Building facades lose small elements such as cracks in bricks, details of decorative windows and bas-reliefs. This makes the scene less realistic, as some fine features of objects become indistinguishable. At maximum settings, thanks to the technology nanite, all elements retain their original detail - even the smallest objects are drawn with high precision, and every stone or curved architectural element looks natural, retaining depth and texture.

Texture quality

At low settings, textures are noticeably reduced in resolution, resulting in blurriness and loss of detail. Surfaces that should appear rough become flat and slightly blurry. The visual effect is especially noticeable on cobblestone streets and stone walls, which lose their natural texture. Maximum settings restore the full amount of detail with high-resolution textures, each of which creates an effect of depth and presence, adding realism to surfaces such as stone, brick, and asphalt.

Lighting and Shadows

Lighting at minimum settings can appear too flat and static, and shadows are often missing or oversimplified. This reduces the dynamism of the scene, making it less alive. At maximum settings, Lumen — an advanced global illumination system. It adds real light and shadows that react to the position of light sources and refract off surfaces. For example, light falling on buildings at sunset casts soft, long shadows, giving the scene depth and atmosphere. At maximum settings, you can see how light penetrates through window openings and reflects off various surfaces, making the picture much more realistic.

Post-processing and visual effects

At minimum settings, effects such as motion blur, depth of field, and volumetric effects are disabled or reduced to a minimum, simplifying the image. This affects the cinematic quality of the scene - the scene looks flatter and simpler. At high settings, it's the opposite: depth of field clearly highlights objects in the foreground, creating the effect of a real shoot, and subtle motion blur adds dynamism. Volumetric effects such as light fog and sun rays add a sense of naturalness and bring atmosphere to the overall picture.

Draw distance and level of detail at a distance

At low settings, the draw distance is limited, and distant objects may not appear or appear as simple silhouettes lacking detail. This is especially noticeable in large open spaces, where buildings and trees gradually appear as you approach. At maximum settings, the draw distance is greatly increased, with even the most distant objects retaining clarity and texture. This helps to create a sense of scale as the viewer can see all the city elements into the distance, including buildings, pavements, and architectural elements, enhancing immersion.

Reflections and surface realism

At minimum settings, reflections are usually absent or greatly simplified. This reduces the realism of the scene, especially when reflective surfaces such as windows and wet asphalt after rain appear in the frame. At maximum settings, reflections are processed using ray tracing (ray tracing), which allows you to accurately convey light and shadow, creating realistic reflections on all suitable surfaces. Buildings and street objects can be clearly displayed in windows, and sunlit areas are reflected on wet pavement, adding depth and realism to the scene.
