NVIDIA's New AI Accelerator for China Will Ditch Hopper Architecture and HBM Memory

Following the recent export ban HGX H20 accelerators to China, company NVIDIA is preparing a new solution for the Chinese market, but it will not be based on the Hopper architectureThis was announced by the company's CEO Jensen Huang on Taiwanese television, and additional details were revealed by sources of Nikkei Asia.

fesAVdXVRoGbgNwXs0mlP9PfOuEIC5afryq1Gt0v

According to insiders, The new accelerator will switch from HBM to GDDR7 memory, to circumvent American export restrictions. Recall that the US banned the supply of not only the H100 and H200, but also the adapted H800 and H20. The latter was the only flagship GPU NVIDIA, available in China before the new ban in April. The company has already lost $5,5 billion in potential revenue. due to these restrictions.

In response to a question about the successor to the H20, Huang has stated outright that it is "not Hopper" because it is no longer possible to modify the architecture. The US justified the ban by saying that the H20 has too high a memory bandwidth and inter-chip connections, making it suitable for military supercomputers.

The move to GDDR7 represents a radical change in approach, since the GH100 (Hopper core) was originally designed to work only with HBM. A potential alternative could be the Blackwell architecture in the consumer version of GB20X (the RTX 50 series is based on it), where GDDR7 is already in use, but it lacks support for NVLink, a key component for scaling AI systems.

Against the backdrop of this uncertain transition period, Interest in Chinese solutions such as Huawei's Ascend 920 is growing, although they are inferior to NVIDIA in performance. In the coming months, NVIDIA will have to develop a new architecture that meets US requirements in order to maintain its position in China - otherwise, the market may be taken over by local manufacturers.

AMD to be first to switch to TSMC's 2nm process

956ab2fe2e0e4d9b50fbd887fcc1ba53

AMD has officially confirmed that it will become TSMC's first customer for the 2nm N2 process, and already in 2026 will release a new generation of server processors based on it - EPYC Venice. The company's senior vice president reported this in an interview with the Korean publication Chosun Biz. According to an AMD representative, TSMC Leads 2nm Race, and at the moment no other contract manufacturer can offer comparable technology.

The new EPYC Venice is built on the architecture Zen 6 and Zen 6C. Leaks indicate that in its maximum configuration, the chip could contain up to 8 CCD, each of which includes 96 "classic" or 256 "dense" cores and up to 128 MB of LXNUMX cache. The main focus in Venice will be on energy efficiency and transistor density, which will provide increased performance per watt.

Earlier, AMD CEO Lisa Su personally visited TSMC's Arizona facility to announce the transition to 2nm. The company became the first public customer of the 2-nm node, ahead of giants such as Apple and NVIDIA, which are also in talks with TSMC and looking for backup partners among Samsung and Intel Foundry Services.

When asked about possible cooperation with other factories, AMD did not rule out such a scenario. According to a representative, the company maintains an ongoing dialogue with other manufacturers, to ensure optimal conditions for customers. However, TSMC remains a priority partner for now.

AMD's Server Business Grew 57% in Q2025 XNUMX, and the launch of Venice is expected to strengthen the company's position in high-performance data centers. AMD will also continue to expand its lineup in the mid-budget segment through the EPYC 4005 "Grado", which will increase the share of AMD solutions in the server industry.

Arrow Lake Refresh will be included in the Core line Ultra 200 - Core models expected Ultra 5 255, Core Ultra 7 275 and Core Ultra 9 295

According to insiders, updated processors Arrow Lake Refresh will receive the designation Core Ultra 200 series and will be presented as Ultra +5 255 Ultra 7 and Ultra 9 295. These models will be a direct upgrade from last year's 245/265/285 and will retain socket compatibility. LGA1851, but architecturally they will remain almost unchanged. In 2026, Intel will completely switch to new platform with new socket for Panther Lake, having completed support for the current one.

Core Ultra 200

In essence, this is a technical refresh with with minor improvements in frequencies and energy efficiency, without changing the microarchitecture. Support for faster DDR5 memory is also expected. However, many users perceived this strategy as a dead end: LGA1851 will only be relevant until the end of this year, and there will be no upgrade boards in 2026.

On forums and social networks, users note that even reduced prices on Ultra 7 265K doesn't make it attractive, because the platform does not provide for long-term modernization. Unlike AMD with AM5, which guarantees support until 2026, Intel still adheres to the policy of frequently changing sockets.

Core Ultra 255/275/295 will become final line for LGA1851, before the company introduces an entirely new platform under Panther Lake in 2026 - with a new socket, a new chipset and Cougar Cove architecture.

Announcement Ultra 200 Refresh expected at Computex 2025, where Intel will reveal the exact specifications and release dates of the models. Judging by the trend, this will be the last opportunity to upgrade on the existing platform.
