Review: Playability

Many are probably already looking forward to the release of Diablo III, because games of this kind are released not only every month, but not even every year! That's where Magicka comes in - a new action-adventure game set in a fantasy world based on Norse mythology. You have to act as magicians of the sacred order and stop the evil dark sorcerer who is wreaking havoc and destruction in the world.

 Magicka_2011_02_01_11_39_27_512

Players will find a unique magic system with many options for combining spells and many types of monsters: from the smallest minions of darkness to giant fire-breathing dragons. We have to control all the main elements and many other forces. But the whole charm of the game is not in them, but in the unique spells that can be combined from these basic magical components. But first of all, you need to complete the training and if you complete it to the end, then in the future you will receive incredible pleasure from completing Magicka...

 Magicka_2011_02_01_11_40_10_743

You can play the game either in splendid isolation, or invite friends to help and play both the story campaign and compete in several special multiplayer modes. The general passage will have to be just right, by the way, because the mission with each level of the game is significantly  becomes more complicated, and either the most patient or those who like to use special trainers will be destined to pass Magicka.

 Magicka_2011_02_01_11_50_59_191

Players will have to break through dark forests and mountain passes, snowy valleys and gloomy dungeons, as well as wacky and comical situations full of sarcasm and sparkling humor, ridiculing all the well-known clichés of fantasy RPGs. In some ways, the game even resembles The Bard's Tale, released back in 2005, both in style and execution.

We invite you to evaluate part of the Magicka game walkthrough, where you can see for yourself the quality of this product:

Magicka is one of the striking examples when the developers tried to do what they wanted, and nothing the hungry publishing house demanded of them, and the result was a truly high-quality product that will not leave any connoisseur of games of this genre indifferent. The only negative is minor bugs that do not so much interfere with the gameplay as they are annoying. But the developers received a good monetary reward for their project and correct these ridiculous errors almost every day by releasing patches for the game....

 Review: Graphics

Magicka at first glance Magicka does not leave any overwhelming emotions - the graphics are not that great, and the technology does not allow it to become one of the most beautiful RPG games. But the point is not in manufacturability, but in design - it is clear that the developers approached their work responsibly, opened up completely and at the end we received a very high-quality and attractive project.

The game physics deserves special attention. In addition to the main physical effects, in Magicka such various elements are physically clearly expressed, mainly fire and water, and of course its variety ice. Thanks to their properties, we can both gain an advantage in battle, and vice versa - be more vulnerable.

In general, the picture came out very nice and raises virtually no complaints, and then we move directly to the game testing itself.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by the Fraps program in the most resource-intensive part of the game. Less productive video cards up to the level of GeForce GTS 250 and Radeon HD 4830 are tested based on the Core 2 Quad Q9550 processor, and more productive ones based on Core™ i7 processors.

 Magicka_2011_02_01_14_32_50_755

This time our video cards were tested in 2 separate screen sizes in normal modes and using AMD Eyefinity technology (there is no support for NVIDIA 3D Vision in the game at the moment), and from our graphs you can evaluate how your video card behaves relative to others modern solutions in almost all modern visual modes. To determine the maximum number of frames, vertical sync was disabled via the video cards driver.

In the graphs, video cards that could not provide comfortable playability, that is, could not overcome the average acceptable FPS of 25 frames, were indicated in gray.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1280x1024

1280_mg

At a resolution of 1280x1024, Magicka feels quite adequate on all modern gaming video cards. The required minimum for users consists of video cards of the Radeon HD 5570 or GeForce 9600 GSO level.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080

1920_mg

When the resolution is increased to 1920x1080, the minimum for the game is video cards of the Radeon HD 3870 or GeForce GT 430 level. Video cards of the Radeon HD 4830 or GeForce 9600 GT level should be considered the most optimal for smooth gameplay.

  Magicka_2011_02_01_14_33_08_958

All our video cards were tested at maximum quality settings on two Full HD monitors combined thanks to Eyefinity technology in a resolution of 3840x1080. Thanks to this technology, the visibility of the surrounding area doubled and we received a small bonus in the fight against opponents and more chances to see places where various useful spells are hidden.

Testing at maximum quality settings using AMD Eyefinity technology on two monitors at a resolution of 3840x1080

3840_mg

With the use of Eyefinity technology, card performance is reduced by 45-55% of the standard mode, depending on the video cards model. The minimum that is needed to play Magicka comfortably at a resolution of 3840x1080 is a video card of the Radeon HD 5750 level, and for comfortable playability you will need a Radeon HD 5770 or higher.

Conclusion: Magicka combines a pretty decent RPG with reasonable system requirements. Of course, to many users they may seem very overpriced, because many are used to playing games of this type on built-in graphics. So an upgrade of one or another component of the computer will be inevitable, especially in anticipation of the release of Diablo III...
