Development began in 2011, when Daniel Vavra, known for his work on the Mafia games, left 2K Czech and founded his own studio, Warhorse Studios. The project started with the ambitious idea of creating a game that would offer a realistic representation of medieval Europe without the fantasy elements that were uncharacteristic of most RPGs of the time.
In 2014, Warhorse Studios launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the game's development. The goal was to raise £300,000, but the campaign ended with over £1,1 million, allowing the developers to significantly expand the scope of the project. During development, the team faced many challenges, including the need to work with historical consultants to achieve maximum authenticity of the events, locations and life of that time. This included the study of historical materials, maps, chronicles and archaeological data.
