DEVELOPMENT HISTORY |
Wreckfest 2 is a sequel to the popular arcade-style car simulator with destruction elements, developed by Bugbear Entertainment with the support of THQ Nordic. The announcement took place in 2024, but work on the game began in 2021, following the commercial success of the original Wreckfest. The studio decided to develop key elements, focusing on a more advanced damage model, track variety, and deep car customization. Unlike the first part, the second game is aimed at a wider market, including players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The developers emphasized that they are not just doing "bigger and better", but are striving for a qualitative leap in the realism of physics and destruction.
The concept of Wreckfest 2 is based on three areas: the realism of the car's behavior on the track, the dynamics of collisions and destruction, and a variety of game modes. The Bugbear team has completely reworked the career mode, expanding its story component and adding non-linear choices during tournaments. A new progression system has also been introduced, where players can not only open new cars, but also upgrade them in dozens of parameters, including suspension, chassis, and even internal safety elements. These improvements directly affect the behavior of the car during accidents.
The game is accompanied by ambitious plans for post-release support. It is already known that seasonal updates will be released with new maps, cars and cosmetic items. The developers are actively interacting with the community, taking into account the feedback on the first part and implementing the most popular features. Among them are an improved replay system, a more developed multiplayer and the ability to create your own tracks through the built-in editor. Wreckfest 2 is being created as a long-term project with a planned expansion of content and tournaments.
GRAPHICS |
Wreckfest 2 is a significant leap forward from the original in terms of graphics and visuals. The game uses a completely updated engine, specially adapted for the new generation of consoles and powerful PCs. It supports real-time ray tracing for shadows and reflections, and uses PBR (Physically Based Rendering) technology, which makes car surfaces more realistic in different weather conditions and under different types of lighting. Every dent, scratch and deformation is now rendered with physical accuracy.
The developers paid special attention to the environment. The tracks have become more detailed and lively: the roadsides now have dynamic objects that react to passing cars, such as flying tires, fence fragments or destructible banners. Weather conditions greatly affect the gameplay - rain, fog, mud and snow not only change the visual component, but also the physics of control. The dynamic lighting system depending on the time of day adds atmosphere, making evening races especially spectacular.
The cars in Wreckfest 2 are highly detailed both outside and inside. The interiors are detailed to the smallest detail, including dashboards, seats and safety elements. In first-person mode, new hand animations and steering wheel interactions have been added, which enhances the effect of presence. Interface elements are minimized for immersion, while all data is displayed directly on the dashboard or driver's helmet. The visual quality as a whole is aimed at achieving a cinematic level, while maintaining stable performance on all platforms.
GAME ENGINE |
Wreckfest 2 runs on an upgraded proprietary Bugbear engine that has received significant updates. The main goal was to achieve the maximum balance between the realistic behavior of cars and arcade accessibility of control. The collision physics model has been completely rewritten. Now each damage is calculated based on many parameters: impact force, collision angle, speed, chassis and suspension condition. This allowed us to create a unique destruction system, where even small contacts can affect controllability or cause failure of transmission elements.
One of the technical achievements of the engine was the support of multi-level tracks with the possibility of partial destruction of the environment. For example, wooden bridges can collapse with a large accumulation of cars, and concrete barriers crumble over time. An improved particle system has also been implemented - debris, dust, glass and dirt are displayed taking into account physics and remain on the track until the end of the race, forming unique traces from each race.
The engine's network architecture has also been reworked. Multiplayer now supports up to 32 players with real-time physics synchronization. A server-side anti-cheat system has been introduced, as well as spectator and broadcast modes. Custom lobbies allow you to customize not only the rules of the race, but also the physical parameters, weather conditions, and level of destruction. Support for Steam Workshop and modifications will remain, but will become more flexible and deep thanks to the open SDK.
Wreckfest 2 is focused on long-term support. All architectural changes to the engine were aimed at scalability and expandability to ensure stable operation of the game in the future, regardless of the size of the content and the number of players. This makes the engine one of the most versatile solutions for arcade car simulators at the current stage of the genre's development.
QUALITY |
Minimum settings
The graphics are simplified with lower quality textures, less detailed shadows and basic destruction effects. Particles and tire smoke, explosions and metal fragments are displayed in a limited volume, and the drawing distance of objects is reduced, while the overall impression of the racing is preserved.
Maximum settings
High-quality textures and models of cars are included, as well as detailed lighting and shadow effects. Destruction looks more realistic due to improved physics and an expanded number of visual effects (more particles, more realistic deformation of cars). The drawing distance is higher, the environment contains more small details, which makes the picture more lively and rich.
