Microsoft Flight Simulator is powered by the Asobo game engine and uses information from Bing Maps, providing access to more than 2 petabytes of data from the cloud. Procedural generation technologies, photogrammetry and machine learning are used to photorealistically and accurately recreate and place in the right places three-dimensional buildings, trees, relief objects, and the like.
The simulator features 37 thousand airports, 80 of which have received high-quality processing.
The French studio Asobo Studio had not previously been involved in the creation of avisimulators, but over the years it has collaborated with Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios in various areas, in particular, working with Kinect and HoloLens technologies, and already had experience creating a game with an extremely large open world - Fuel . The world of Fuel was built using procedural generation: areas of the real world were reconstructed from satellite images, and specific objects like trees were added to them procedurally.
In 2016, Jörg Neumann, then working at Microsoft and later becoming the development manager for Flight Simulator, started a flight simulator project with Asobo: the development would depict an airplane flying over Seattle and its surrounding area, using Bing satellite maps and procedural generation technology to recreate the terrain the same way it was done in Fuel. Later that year, the prototype was shown to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox Game Studios; Spencer initially mistook the demonstration for a video recording of a real flight and asked in bewilderment “why are we watching this video”? Neumann showed him that what was happening on the screen could be controlled - this was not a recording, but a full-fledged virtual environment.
Microsoft Flight Simulator was announced at E3 2019 on June 9, 2019. The game was released on August 18, 2020 for Windows, the game will be released on the Xbox One platform a little later.

Minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level Radeon RX 590 or GeForce GTX 1060. A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions Radeon RX 5700 XT or GeForce GTX 1080.
