According to a TRENDFOCUS report, the total client SSD market shrank by 15% last year compared to 2021, marked by rapid growth in demand amid the ongoing pandemic.

The main reason for the fall is the decline in sales of new laptops and desktop PCs: minus 13% in commodity terms. At the same time, the negative trend for storage vendors was reduced by the accelerated modernization of systems already in use by consumers, due to both the development of SSD technology and the decrease in the cost of devices to an all-time low.

Many of the PCs purchased in the early days of the pandemic are expected to enter an upgrade or replacement cycle in the coming months, further boosting demand for SSDs.

If in 2022 the share of SSD, as the only drive in desktop PCs, reached 75%, then by the end of this year this figure is predicted by experts at 90%. This scenario, reinforced by Microsoft's plans to move away from hard drives as the primary data storage in PCs, will see only a handful of systems with hard drives go on sale as early as the third quarter.

This trend has allowed at least one SSD manufacturer not only to avoid the problems of shrinking the market, but to increase sales.

According to TRENDFOCUS, speaking about the distribution of the market between manufacturers, the leading supplier of SSDs for final consumers in 2022 was the American company Kingston Digital, one of the enterprises of the largest independent manufacturer of memory devices and solutions, Kingston Technology.

Thus, the market share of Kingston at the end of the year was 24%, which is equivalent to 22 million shipped client SSDs. Only in the third quarter, Kingston's share of end-user devices reached 28,4%, indicating that further growth is possible despite the ongoing macro market problems.
