"Marvel Rivals" has become one of the most ambitious projects of NetEase Games, developed in close cooperation with Marvel Games. The history of the game dates back to 2021, when Marvel was actively expanding its franchises in the gaming industry, including adaptations of comics, films and TV series. The project is conceived as a PvP shooter that will be able to unite Marvel fans and fans of competitive multiplayer games.
Development began with a deep analysis of popular PvP shooters like Overwatch and Valorant to understand what mechanics and design elements were most successful in the genre. At the same time, the NetEase Games team worked closely with Marvel to accurately convey the spirit and aesthetics of the universe. It was decided to create a game where each character has unique abilities that match their canonical capabilities, which required fine-tuning the balance.
Marvel Games provided full access to its intellectual assets, including character designs, stories, and historical locations. This allowed NetEase to create not just a shooter, but a game where every detail corresponds to the rich Marvel history. For example, Tokyo 2099 and Yggsgard were recreated with the canon of the universe in mind, making the maps recognizable and atmospheric for fans.
The development process included numerous testing stages. Closed alpha and beta versions were conducted with the participation of professional players and eSports teams, which helped optimize the balance of characters and modes. The developers also took into account the wishes of fans, actively communicating with the community through official channels.
Marvel Rivals was officially announced at Gamescom 2023, where it immediately grabbed attention for its unique approach. The trailer showed off large-scale battles involving Spider-Man, Magneto, and Iron Man, sparking excitement among fans. Since the announcement, the developers have shared details about the game, including system requirements, update plans, and monetization structure.

Tokyo 2099, on the contrary, is a futuristic city with neon lights and high-tech buildings. These contrasts in design make each map unique and memorable.
Particular attention was paid to the character models. Each hero or villain is made with a high degree of detail. For example, Spider-Man moves gracefully and dexterously, his suit reflects light and demonstrates textured elements of fabric. Iron Man impresses with his metal armor that shines under the light, and Rocket looks realistic thanks to the well-thought-out animation of fur and facial expressions.
The effects of abilities deserve a special mention. The developers spent a lot of time creating unique visual effects for each ability. For example, Magneto's magnetic fields manifest as dynamically changing energy waves, and Black Panther's powerful blows are accompanied by bright flashes of vibranium. These details enhance the individuality of each character and add spectacle to the fights.
Weather and lighting effects play a major role in creating atmosphere. In the Hydra Base Antarctica map, snow storms make visibility difficult, while in the Wakandan Empire, players can watch the setting sun shine through the dense vegetation. These elements make each session unique, adding depth to the gameplay.

"Marvel Rivals" is built on a cutting-edge game engine that delivers high performance and visual quality. The engine was chosen to support complex physics, dynamic lighting, and large-scale multiplayer battles. Although the specific engine name has not been revealed, it is clear that it supports next-generation technology.
One of the main tasks of the engine was to ensure smooth gameplay even with 12 players and numerous special effects. This is especially important for a PvP shooter, where delays or FPS drops can significantly affect the gaming experience. Optimization of the engine allowed the game to work stably on modern platforms, supporting 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.
The engine also integrates complex systems of destruction and interaction with the environment. Certain elements on the maps, such as barricades or doors, can be destroyed, which opens up new tactical possibilities. In addition, dynamic physics allow objects to react realistically to the actions of players, for example, cars explode when hit by shells, and trees sway from the shock wave.
The lighting and shadow system in "Marvel Rivals" is one of the major technical achievements. The engine uses dynamic lighting that adapts to changing conditions. For example, on the "Tokyo 2099" map, neon lights reflect in puddles on the asphalt, creating the effect of a rainy night. In "Yggsgard", rays of sunlight penetrate through dense foliage, casting complex shadows that move depending on the time of day.
The artificial intelligence built into the engine is responsible for the behavior of neutral characters and tactical elements of the maps. For example, Hydra drones on the Hydra Base map can attack players, which adds additional threat and complicates the completion of tasks. This makes the gameplay more intense and varied.
