DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

Marvel Rivals is an ambitious team-based PvP shooter developed by NetEase Games in collaboration with Marvel Games. The project was announced in March 2024, but its development began much earlier. The idea to create the game appeared at the beginning of 2019, when the popularity of team shooters reached its peak. Inspired by the success of games such as Overwatch и Valorant, NetEase developers decided to create a unique product that would combine exciting gameplay with the rich Marvel universe.

Start of development

The project began with conceptualization and initial discussions between NetEase Games and Marvel Games. The main idea was to create a game that would allow players to control their favorite superheroes and supervillains in dynamic team battles. The collaboration with Marvel Games was critical as it allowed the developers to draw on a vast library of characters and stories.

The early stages of development included creating concept art and developing the game's core mechanics. The NetEase Games team, which included experienced developers who had previously worked on projects such as Call of Duty и Battlefield, focused on creating combat systems and character balance. Initial prototypes were tested internally to ensure the viability of the idea and gameplay mechanics.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

Minimum graphics settings:

With minimal graphics settings in Marvel Rivals the game retains the basic visual appeal, but with noticeable simplifications to ensure a stable gaming experience on less powerful systems. Basic lighting and texture elements have been greatly simplified, resulting in less detailed and more blurry images. The environment loses some of its detail, which is noticeable in surface textures, character models and objects.

Textures in the game at minimum settings have a lower resolution, which makes the surfaces of objects and landscapes less clear. The lighting becomes more static, which reduces the realism and depth of the scene. Shadows are also simplified and can appear flat, reducing the three-dimensionality of objects and environments. Dynamic lighting, which creates realistic lighting effects, is being replaced by simpler lighting models.

Particle effects such as smoke, dust and explosions are also simplified or reduced in number. This reduces the load on the GPU, but makes scenes less rich and dynamic. Water and other fluids in the game lose their realism, reflections become less accurate, and surface effects become less detailed. Weather effects and animations are also simplified, which reduces the overall atmosphere of the game.

As a result, the game at minimum all settings is still playable and visually appealing, but loses much of its depth and realism. These simplifications are necessary to ensure smooth gameplay on systems with lower performance.

Maximum graphics settings:

At maximum graphics settings Marvel Rivals unleashes its full visual potential, offering photorealistic images and high detail. High resolution textures allow you to see the smallest details on the surfaces of objects, plants and characters. Every surface, be it earth, stone or metal structure, appears sharp and detailed, creating the impression of a living and realistic world.

Dynamic lighting and shadows provide a realistic perception of space. Light sources such as the sun and lamps create deep and dynamic shadows that change depending on the time of day and weather conditions. This adds depth and realism to each scene, making the world around you feel alive and rich. Realistic reflections on water and metal surfaces add extra depth and visual interest.

Particle effects such as smoke, dust and magical attacks are created with a high degree of detail and dynamism. These effects make scenes more rich and spectacular. Water looks realistic with detailed reflections and refractions of light, adding to the overall visual quality of the game. Weather effects such as rain, snow and fog look impressive and add atmosphere to the gameplay.

Animations of creatures and characters become smoother and more detailed. This adds depth and realism to the gameplay, creating a feeling of a living and dynamic world. Animations of interaction with the environment, such as combat movements and magic spells, also become more realistic and spectacular. High detail and realism of graphics at maximum settings make Marvel Rivals a visually impressive and immersive game that offers a deep and engaging gaming experience.

DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) from NVIDIA:

DLSS is an image enhancement technology developed by NVIDIA that uses artificial intelligence to upscale an image from a low resolution to a higher resolution. DLSS uses custom Tensor Cores on NVIDIA GPUs to perform complex machine learning calculations. This technology can significantly improve game performance while maintaining high image quality.

When using DLSS in Marvel Rivals Players can expect clear and detailed images, even with a significant increase in resolution. DLSS algorithms are trained on massive amounts of data, allowing them to predict and restore details that might be lost with conventional upscaling. This makes DLSS an ideal choice for those who want to play at high graphics settings without compromising performance.

FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) from AMD:

FSR is a similar technology from AMD that is also designed to improve images and improve performance. Unlike DLSS, FSR does not require specialized hardware and can run on a wider range of GPUs, including older models and competitive devices. FSR uses spatial enhancement algorithms that allow image upscaling with lower hardware requirements.

FSR in Marvel Rivals also provides noticeable improvements in performance and image quality. However, since FSR does not use machine learning, upscaling quality may be slightly lower compared to DLSS, especially in complex scenes with a lot of fine detail.

Intel XeSS (Xe Super Sampling):

Intel XeSS is a new image enhancement technology from Intel that also uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to scale images. XeSS is designed to run on Intel GPUs, but also supports other architectures through the use of universal instructions.

XeSS in Marvel Rivals provides similar benefits to DLSS and FSR, offering improved image quality and increased performance. Intel technology also uses specialized cores to perform machine learning tasks, resulting in high levels of detail and image clarity.

Comparison and conclusion:

When comparing all three technologies - DLSS, FSR and XeSS - in context Marvel Rivals It can be noted that all of them offer significant improvements in performance and image quality. However, NVIDIA's DLSS appears to be slightly better than other upscaling methods due to its use of more advanced machine learning algorithms and specialized hardware.

DLSS provides higher image quality, especially in scenes with a lot of fine detail and complex visual effects. This makes it the preferred choice for gamers who are looking for the best visual experience without compromising on performance. FSR and XeSS also offer significant improvements, but may be slightly inferior to DLSS in terms of final image quality.
