A New Era of Gaming: NVIDIA DLSS 4
NVIDIA DLSS — is a set of neural rendering technologies powered by GeForce RTX Tensor Cores that boost frame rates and deliver crisp, high-quality visuals comparable to native-resolution rendering. This technology is used in over 700 RTX-enabled games and applications.
The exhibition CES 2025 NVIDIA has unveiled a further development of DLSS - a new version DLSS-4, which includes Multi Frame Generation for video cards and laptops GeForce RTX 50 Series. When launching new products, support Multi Frame Generation will receive 75 games and applications.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation
DLSS Multi Frame Generation generates up to three additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame and works in conjunction with the full suite of DLSS technologies to increase frame rates up to 8x over traditional brute force rendering. Such an impressive performance boost on graphics cards GeForce RTX 5090 opens the possibility of running games with ray tracing at 4K resolution and 240 frames per second.
In one of the examples shown in the scene Cyberpunk 2077 on GeForce RTX 5090, DLSS 4 technology with Multi Frame Generation increases performance by more than 8 times compared to classic brute force rendering, while latency is halved and image quality is further improved.
Among other things DLSS-4 brings the biggest update to AI models since the release of DLSS 2.0 in 2020.
DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Super Resolution and DLAA with Transformers
As part of DLSS 4 Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution и DLAA are now powered by the industry's first real-time graphics engine that uses the Transformer architecture — the same one that powers today's ChatGPT, Flux, and Gemini models. The new DLSS Transformer models improve image quality by increasing stability during motion, reducing ghosting, and enhancing detail in fast-moving scenes.
NVIDIA also showed off a DLSS 4 teardown featuring Bryan Catanzaro and Edward Liu.
With the release of a series of graphics processors GeForce RTX 50 Users will be able to update games and applications to take advantage of these improvements.
В 75 games and applications with the support Frame Generation it will be possible to switch to Multi Frame Generation, if you are using a GeForce RTX 50 series graphics card. For the same games, the updated Frame Generation will be available on GeForce RTX 50 Series и GeForce RTX 40 Series, increasing performance and reducing video memory consumption.
In addition, on all video cards of the series GeForceRTX It will be possible to upgrade DLSS with Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution and DLAA to the new transformer model.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation: Multiply Your Performance with GeForce RTX 50 Series
In DLSS 3 technology Frame Generation game data (motion vectors, frame depth) and the optical flow field from the GeForce RTX 40 Series Optical Flow Accelerator were used to generate an additional frame. Generating multiple frames would require re-engaging both the optical flow accelerator and the AI model for each generated frame, which would significantly increase the load on GPU and resulted in a decrease in the input frame rate.
DLSS4Multi Frame Generation combines hardware improvements in the Blackwell architecture with innovations in DLSS software to efficiently generate multiple frames at once.
The updated AI model for frame generation is 40% faster, requires 30% less video memory, and runs only once per rendered frame, while creating multiple frames. For example, in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide This new model boosted frame rates by 10% while reducing memory consumption by 400MB at 4K and max settings with DLSS enabled. Frame Generation.
In addition, optical flow generation has been accelerated by replacing the hardware optical flow module with a highly efficient AI model. Together, these AI models significantly reduce the computational cost of generating additional frames.
Even taking into account all the optimizations, GPU still need to execute 5 AI models in a matter of milliseconds - for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction и Multi Frame Generation — for each rendered frame, so that DLSS Multi Frame Generation did not slow down the system. For this purpose, video cards GeForce RTX 50 Series 5th Generation Tensor Cores have appeared, with up to 5 times increased performance when performing AI operations.
Once new frames have been generated, they are played back evenly to ensure smoothness. In DLSS 3 Frame Generation a CPU-side synchronization mechanism was used, which resulted in variable latency that increased as additional frames were added, reducing smoothness.
To eliminate the complexity of generating multiple frames, the Blackwell architecture implements a hardware mechanism Flip Metering, which moves frame synchronization logic into the display engine, allowing for more precise control over when it's output to the screen. The display engine itself has also been improved and now processes twice as many pixels, supporting higher resolutions and refresh rates to enable Flip Metering with DLSS 4.
Together, the new hardware and software improvements in DLSS 4 enable 15 out of every 16 pixels to be rendered with high quality, smoothness, and low latency.
For DLSS 4 games and applications with Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution improve frame rates up to 8x over brute force rendering and deliver up to 1,7x performance gains when going from Frame Generation to Multi Frame Generation.
New Transformer Model Improves Image Quality for All GeForce RTX Users
DLSS-4 introduces a new architecture for DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Super Resolution и DLAA, the first in the graphics industry to use real-time transformers.
Previously, DLSS used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that generated new pixels by analyzing local context and tracking changes in these areas over a sequence of frames. Six years of continuous improvements have allowed it to reach the limits of the CNN model.
New DLSS Transformer Model uses a vision transformer mechanism with a self-attention operation that evaluates the importance of each pixel across the entire frame and across multiple frames at once. By doubling the number of parameters compared to the CNN model, the transformer has a deeper “understanding” of what is happening in the scene and generates pixels with greater stability, fewer artifacts (ghosting), higher detail in motion, and smoother contours of objects.
The quality gain is especially noticeable in scenes that require ray tracing: the new transformer model for Ray Reconstruction provides a significant improvement in image quality, especially in difficult lighting conditions. For example, in frames from Alan wake 2 The transformer improves image stability when rendering metal mesh, reduces ghosting on rotating fan blades, and eliminates "flickering" of power transmission lines.
The Transformer model for Super Resolution also shows promising results and will be available for testing as a beta version so that users can try out the improvements and provide feedback before the official release. Tests show that this model improves temporal image stability, reduces ghosting, and increases detail in dynamic scenes.
The new Transformer model architecture will provide years of robustness for further image quality improvements, similar to how NVIDIA has been developing the CNN model for 6 years.
In Game Horizon Forbidden West™ Complete Edition The Transformer-powered Super Resolution DLSS beta brings increased texture detail to Aloy's clothing and gear, as well as overall scene clarity.
