Western Digital Reveals the Future of HDDs – Up to 100 TB by 2030

Company Western Digital presented a roadmap for the development of HDD technologies, revealing plans to increase the capacity of hard drives up to 100 TB. The release is expected as early as 2025. ePMR- storage devices with a capacity of up to 36 TB, and in 2026, models with HAMR-recording, increasing the volume to 44 TB.

A key upgrade is expected after 2030, when the technology HDMR (Heat Dot Magnetic Recording) will allow to achieve 100 TB and above. In new HDDs, Western Digital continues to implement OptiNAND и UltraSMR, improving storage density and increasing energy efficiency.

Go to HAMR will significantly improve the reliability and performance of hard drives, which is especially important for data centers and cloud services. At the initial stage, HAMR drives will support capacities from 36 TB to 44 TB, however, further development of technology opens the way to 80 TB and above.

Western Digital is investing heavily in storage research and development to maintain its leadership in the storage industry. With the demand for high-capacity storage solutions rapidly growing, the company plans to introduce new technologies without compromising the speed and durability of its devices.
