Leak Reveals PSSR2 Goals for PS5 Pro: 4K@120 FPS, 8K, and Sony's TAA Alternative

New details about the next version of Sony's upscaling technology have emerged online — PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR2, which is intended for the PS5 Pro. According to a fresh leak from Moore's Law Is Dead, the new version will focus on reducing the impact on frame rate and support for higher resolutions and refresh rates, including 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz.

The main drawback of the current PSSR is noted to be excessive load on performance in games. For example, in God of War Ragnarok on PS5 Pro, enabling PSSR resulted in a frame rate cap of 70–75 FPS, even though the system could deliver 80–90 FPS in similar scenes without it. PSSR2 is being created as a "lighter" neural network, trained on an improved image sample to improve upscaling efficiency and minimize frame time loss.

The current implementation of PSSR requires a minimum internal rendering of 864p to upscale to 4K, and Sony considered this to be the limit without significantly degrading quality. In PSSR2, the goal is maintaining or improving visual quality even with reduced processing costs. The updated version is expected to support:

  • 4K @ 120 Hz,

  • 1440p at 120Hz,

  • 1080p at 120Hz,

  • 8K @ 60 Hz - depending on the optimization of a particular game.

Additionally, the leak reveals that Sony is testing a separate feature called MFSR (Multi-Frame Super Resolution) — a potential replacement for traditional TAA. Even if the player doesn't enable PSSR, this system can improve visual quality in PS5 Pro-adapted games by using AI reconstruction instead of temporal anti-aliasing.

Judging by the volume of changes, PSSR2 Will Be a Key Element of the New PS5 Pro Graphics Stack, designed to output high-resolution images with stable performance and smoothness.
