Thunderbolt 5 is now in video cards - SPARKLE showed Arc with USB-C output for 8K and PD

At Computex 2025, SPARKLE presented the world's first graphics card with Thunderbolt 5 support. Project with a code name Project Thundermage is based on the Intel Arc GPU and includes an integrated Thunderbolt 5 controller (Intel Barlow Ridge platform). The main innovation is USB-C video output with TB5 support, capable of simultaneously transmitting a video signal and providing power.

Thunderbolt 5 provides throughput up to 80 GB/s, which is enough to output the image in 8K resolution at 60Hz. At the same time, the Type-C output port supports Power Delivery up to 27W (9V/3A), which allows the connected device not only to receive an image, but also to be charged - for example, a portable monitor.

In essence, Project Thundermage graphics card combines graphics and a universal docking station in one device, which is especially relevant for compact systems and professional workstations. TB5 integration into video cards may become a new trend for work platforms where flexible connection, minimal cables and fast data transfer are important.

SPARKLE confirmed that The video card is not planned for mass sale yet, but the technology is already being demonstrated as “ready to use.” Technical details of the video core, memory capacity, and power consumption are not disclosed, but at the presentation, the device was connected to an 8K display and operated in full boot mode.

Intel is pushing Thunderbolt 5 as a new standard for universal connectivity, and interface integration into GPU could be a logical step to simplify workstation configurations. The question of compatibility and feasibility for the gaming segment remains, but in the professional sphere - especially with 8K or AR/VR displays - the solution looks promising.
