Qualcomm Ditches Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 on Samsung's 2nm Process

Qualcomm is rumored to Canceled Two Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 Variants, including the version on Samsung's 2nm GAA process technology. Devices with designations SM8850-S and SM8850-T are no longer included in the engineering database, and the chip itself will only be released in one version - SM8850 based on TSMC N3P process technology.

It was previously assumed that the "S" version would be manufactured on Samsung's 2nm GAA process, and the "T" on TSMC's 3nm N3P. However, Samsung is having trouble with the yield of usable crystals, which still haven't reached 70%, probably caused the cancellation of the dual approach. According to unconfirmed information, prototypes based on the Exynos 2600 showed only 50% yield, and Qualcomm Didn't Risk Mass Production.

In this way, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 to Remain TSMC Exclusive, which deprives Samsung not only of potential orders, but also of a prestigious flagship project. Moreover, QRD8850 Reference Design Now Priced at $15, which increases development costs for smartphone manufacturers.

The Galaxy S26 is expected to receive a chip based on the 3-nm N3P, despite early rumors of a 2-nm version from Samsung. Qualcomm itself has not yet commented on the change of partner, but this situation has already been developing for the second year in a row, which calls into question the maturity of Samsung's GAA solutions.
