Portable version of PlayStation 6 will be weaker than PS5 and will receive a 15W chip
Portable version PlayStation 6, according to rumors, will not be more powerful current PlayStation 5, despite supporting its games. According to information published on the NeoGAF forum and reprinted on Reddit, the console will be based on energy efficient chip с TDP 15W, produced by 3nm process technology. This puts it on par with modern powerful portable devices, but significantly inferior in performance compared to the PS5.
However, Sony expects to provide Compatibility with PS5 games. It is not yet clear what will be used to achieve support: simplified graphics, cloud streaming, or a hybrid launch model. Insiders note that the system will likely have serious compromises in quality visuals and FPS.
The full-size PlayStation 6 is in the works pre-production validation: The SoC is already complete in design and is being prepared for A0 tapeout — a major step in chip production. Given the usual tapeout-to-release timeframe, a full-fledged PS6 could be out by 2027 year.
It was also previously known that Intel tried to compete for the contract to produce the PS6 SoC, but lost out to AMD due to internal pricing disagreements. As a result, AMD to become chip supplier again for all PS6 series.
