PCIe 7.0: The New Standard of Speed and Performance
Organization PCI-SIG released a version 0.7 PCI Express 7.0 standard, providing access to its members. The full specification is expected by the end of 2025, and the first devices supporting the standard could appear by 2027.
PCIe 7.0 will provide Up to 512GB/s bidirectional throughput via an x16 configuration, which is 4 times the capacity of PCIe 5.0. Key improvements include:
- Use of technology PAM4 to improve the efficiency of data transmission;
- Reduced latency and increased reliability;
- Supports backward compatibility with all previous PCIe versions;
- Increasing energy efficiency.
These opportunities will create the basis for faster SSDs, powerful graphics cards and AI accelerators. For example, PCIe 7.0 is expected to enable the production of M.2 SSDs with read speed over 50 GB/s.
On the CES 2025 Phison has already shown the limits of PCIe 5.0 by introducing next-generation SSD controllers, confirming the need for a faster standard.
Modern PCs are mainly used PCIe 5.0, and the transition to PCIe 6.0 is just getting started. However, PCI-SIG aims to support technology development by doubling capacity every three years. The new standard allows manufacturers to avoid developing their own solutions, maintaining compatibility and preventing market fragmentation.
PCIe 7.0 offers optimized energy consumption and provides the same throughput with fewer lines. This is especially important for power-constrained devices such as laptops and compact workstations.
