MSI's New RTX 5090 Connector Melts Under Normal Load
Company MSI was the first to implement the concept painted power connectors for video cards to minimize user errors. Yellow markings on the connector showed whether the cable was fully inserted. This system was intended to prevent failures similar to those that occurred with RTX 4090.
However, the incident with the new GeForce RTX 5090 SUPER shows that the problem has not disappeared.A user of the Quasar Zone forum reported, that after two hours of a normal gaming session, when consuming 400 W his cable melted. In doing so, he used the latest connector. 12V-2×6, which was supposed to be safer than previous solutions.
The published photos show that the melting occurred on the cable side, not the video card. Although GPU continued to work, the extent of its damage is still unclear. The user is preparing RMA request, and MSI plans to investigate the incident, as it could cast doubt on the reliability of the new power supply for cards costing around $3150.
The incident shows that even with the most modern protection measures, the problems of overheating connectors have not yet been completely resolved. Especially considering that official adapters of a similar type are used with other RTX 50-series video cards.
