Apple M4 Max showed 120 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition - with MetalFX and frame generation
During a closed demonstration at Apple Park, it became clear that M4 Max chipset capable of launching Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on MacBook Pro at 120 fpsThis became possible thanks to 40-core GPU, support MetalFX upscaling, as well as functions frame generation, introduced in Metal 4.
Although the game was launched on ultra settings, it is important to clarify: these are not the maximum parameters. Some graphics options were reduced, which allowed the system to withstand a high frame rate. According to the developers, Ray tracing and path tracing were disabled in this test. — otherwise, the M4 Max would not be able to maintain 120 FPS at the MacBook Pro's native resolution of 3024×1964 pixels.
Frame generation (interpolation), added to macOS Tahoe and Metal 4, played a key role. Compared to RTX 4090 Laptop (60–80 FPS with path tracing and DLSS Quality) shows that M4 Max reached 120 FPS only by upscaling and artificially increasing the frame rate, rather than raw power. This is a major step towards supporting AAA games on macOS, but with caveats on image quality and enabled tricks.
