AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D – new case of processor damage on MSI X870E

On the forum Reddit User u/Realistic_Age_718 reported that his 9800X3D failed after activation amd expo – technology that speeds up memory operation due to more aggressive timings. After turning on EXPO, the system stopped loading, and the error indicator displayed the code "00". Even after BIOS rollback to version E6E59AMSI.A10 the problem didn't go away - the central processor turned out to be damaged.

Ryzen 9800X3D Bulk

In the published pictures you can see bulge in the center of the CPU case, which indicates permanent damage... Interesting that motherboard remained in working condition - all contacts of the processor socket OK.

Previously, such cases occurred more often on ASRock X870/X870E, which forced the manufacturer to release BIOS update 3.20 Beta, trying to fix the problem. Now a similar situation has been identified on MSI X870E, which may indicate problems with BIOS or power surges.

Some users indicate that the problem may have occurred due to installation errors, however, in this case the owner claims that the system worked normally before EXPO was activated. Moreover, after the incident, the board was able to start with the processor Ryzen 8500G, which eliminates serious damage to the board itself.

It is now expected that MSI can release BIOS updateto prevent further CPU failures.
