AMD RDNA 4 GPU Radeon RX 8000 and PS5 Pro to Get Improved Ray Tracing Engine
AMD RDNA 4 GPU, which will be used in the Radeon RX 8000 and Sony PS5 Pro, will receive an updated and improved Ray Tracing engine. These changes include dual Ray Tracing Intersect Engine, Ray Tracing Tri-Pair optimizations, BVH Footprint improvements, and RT support for OBB and Intersection Node. The new RT units will allow AMD to compete with NVIDIA, which is several generations ahead of AMD in the field of Ray Tracing.
Ray Tracing was previously introduced at AMD with the debut of RDNA 2 in 2020, while NVIDIA introduced the technology back in 2018 with Turing (GeForce RTX 20). RDNA 4 GPUs are scheduled to launch in early 2025 and will include Navi 48 and Navi 44 chips.
These improvements will be significant for the Sony PS5 Pro, which will use custom RDNA GPU with RDNA 4 elements such as BVH8 traversal, while current RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 only support BVH4 traversal.
