AMD wins approval to export Instinct MI308 chips to China, beating NVIDIA
Company AMD confirmed receipt of export licenses Instinct MI308 artificial intelligence chips to China, which was a significant development given the ongoing restrictions on Nvidia H20In AMD's Q3 quarterly earnings call, CEO Lisa Su stated that the company "has certainty" about its offering for the Chinese market, and that decision was the MI308 platform.
Although accurate Instinct MI308 specifications have not yet been revealed, it is assumed that they are at the level NVIDIA H20 accelerators, as they must comply with US export control requirements. This allows AMD to offer a competitive solution in a market where NVIDIA has faced slowdowns in obtaining export licenses and difficulties adapting its architecture to Chinese standards.
Despite receiving permission, AMD did not include revenue from MI308 in the Q4 forecast, citing the dynamic situation and uncertainty regarding demand and opportunities in China. Management emphasizes that work with customers is ongoing, and only then will it be possible to discuss potential volumes.
