OpenAI Selects AMD: 6 GW GPU, including MI450, for global AI infrastructure
AMD and OpenAI Announce Major Partnership, within the framework of which OpenAI will deploy infrastructure with the capacity up to 6 gigawatts on the base Instinct GPU from AMD. The first wave is 1 GW based on the new MI450 accelerator, the launch of which is scheduled for second half of 2026.
Accelerators AMD Instinct MI450 will provide up to 40 PFLOPs of computing, will be equipped 432 GB of HBM4 memory and will provide throughput up to 19,6 TB/sThese figures are almost double those of the previous generation MI300X. The new chips will be the core of the upcoming OpenAI architecture, but will also be used in other Instinct models, including the MI300 and MI350 series.
Cooperation includes multi-level agreement: AMD will grant OpenAI warrants for up to 160 million shares, which will be gradually activated as procurement scales from 1 to 6 GW. AMD's market performance and OpenAI's success in deploying infrastructure will also be taken into account.
Executives from both companies emphasize the importance of the technology alliance: "The partnership will accelerate the global adoption of AI.", and AMD is waiting tens of billions of dollars in revenue from the deal. This is one of the largest contracts in the AI computing field to date.
