Nvidia CEO Warns US AI Restrictions Strengthen China's Hand

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed concerns about US AI policy towards China. At the VivaTech conference in Paris, he said that despite the US's technological superiority, trade isolation could lead to a loss of ground in the global race for AI.

"Huawei is covering for China - and will cover for everyone else if the US refuses to participate," Huang said. However, he noted that current measures – including export restrictions, visa restrictions for Chinese students and revisions to the CHIPS Act – could undermine the leadership of the American AI infrastructure.

Nvidia acknowledges technological advantage over Huawei, but warns against underestimating competitor. Within China, Huawei plays a key role in building its own AI stacks, and U.S. restrictions are only accelerating these processes. If the American ecosystem refuses to cooperate with China, the Chinese stack could become a global standard, Huang believes.

In recent years, China has overtaken the United States in the volume and quality of scientific publications in the chip field. China has doubled U.S. scientific productivity in advanced semiconductors over the past decade, according to a recent report. That trend could accelerate if the U.S. continues to cut funding and limit international collaboration.

Huang called for taking into account the long-term consequences of short-term policies. While he stresses that he supports the president and believes in a strategy, Nvidia calls for a more cautious approach to maintain the global leadership of American technology.
