Intel to begin layoffs at Oregon plants in July

Intel notifies employees of upcoming staff reductions at the Silicon Forest manufacturing campus in Oregon. The first round of layoffs will begin in mid-July and be completed by the end of the month, with additional rounds possible if the company deems them necessary.

The restructuring will affect Intel's Foundry division, which will focus on engineering and technical roles. An internal letter sent to factory employees announced a reduction in organizational complexity and a reduction in the number of management positions. According to Intel, this is being done to “improve execution and reduce costs.”

Although there are no exact figures, we are talking about large-scale optimization. By December 2024, Intel had 108 employees, down 900 from the previous year. The company had previously cut 15 jobs in Oregon, but still retains about 000 jobs — Intel’s largest manufacturing cluster.

The cuts are expected to primarily affect support and administrative roles. Highly skilled engineers and EUV lithography specialists working with D1X and D1D will remain indispensable. However, automation has reduced the need for operators, logisticians and personnel in non-core areas, which were the goals of the restructuring.

Each Intel division is expected to make its own cuts, based on the company's cost-cutting goals. With 14A delays and a general struggle for profitability, Intel is forced to take unpopular steps.
