The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is a high-end graphics card from NVIDIA, released in January 2024 as part of the Ada Lovelace family. It represents a major upgrade over the original RTX 4070 Ti and is aimed at gamers running at 1440p and even 4K resolutions, as well as professionals who value not only high performance but also increased video memory.

Development and announcement

After the RTX 4070 Ti was released in early 2023, many users were unhappy with the fact that at that price ($799), the card offered only 12 GB of video memory and a reduced 192-bit memory bus. This limited its capabilities in resource-intensive applications and future games with high textures. NVIDIA took the criticism into account and in January 2024 introduced the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER - a full-fledged update with a new chip, a larger memory bus, and already 16 GB of GDDR6X.

The SUPER version hit the market on January 24, 2024 and was the long-awaited answer for those who were waiting for a card with a large amount of VRAM without having to overpay for the RTX 4080.

Architecture

Unlike the RTX 4070 Ti, which was based on the AD104 graphics chip, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is built on a more powerful AD103 core - the same one used in the RTX 4080. This in itself is a serious upgrade for the card. It has additional computing units activated, an improved memory subsystem, and even increased memory bandwidth.

Key features of the Ada Lovelace (AD103) architecture:

  • 4nm process technology: High-tech manufacturing process allows for nearly 46 billion transistors to be placed, resulting in high density, energy efficiency and performance.

  • Increased number of CUDA cores: Now with 8448 cores instead of the regular 7680 Ti's 4070, improving overall processing speed for gaming and productivity tasks.

  • 256-bit memory bus and 16GB GDDR6X: Finally, one of the main shortcomings of the original 4070 Ti has been addressed. The card now has a full bandwidth of 716,8 GB/s, making it suitable for heavy tasks, 4K texture work, and future games.

  • More RT and Tensor cores: 66 RT cores and 264 Tensor cores work for ray tracing and AI acceleration. This is especially important when using DLSS 3 and other neural network technologies.

  • Increased L2 cache (64 MB): Twice as much as the previous 4070 series, reducing video memory access and improving efficiency with large amounts of data.

As a result, the card not only outperforms its predecessor, but also approaches the RTX 4080, especially at 1440p and 4K resolutions. Power efficiency remains at a decent level, despite the performance gains.

Performance

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER shows a solid 10-20% increase over the regular 4070 Ti. This is especially noticeable in games that use ray tracing and large textures, where the increased memory capacity makes itself felt. For example, in Cyberpunk 2077 on settings Ultra with ray tracing and DLSS 3, the card produces more stable frames and holds the scene better in 4K, unlike the 12-gigabyte version, which was limited by the VRAM limit.

There's also a significant improvement in performance in workloads like video editing, 3D visualization, and machine learning, thanks to more cores and memory.

Competitors

The main competitor of the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT. Although the Radeon has more video memory (20 GB), in games with ray tracing and technologies like DLSS, NVIDIA is confidently ahead. Also, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER came closest to the RTX 4080, reducing the difference in performance with significant savings in price.
