The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card is based on GPU GP102, like Titan X. The GP102 crystal, manufactured using the 16 nm FinFET standard at TSMC, contains 12 billion transistors in an area of ​​471 mm2. The parameters of the next-highest-ranking chip in the Pascal line, GP104, are much more modest - 7,2 billion transistors and 314 mm2.

However, the structure of the GP102 computational units is the same as that of the GP104 chip, taking into account quantitative changes at the highest level of the architecture, so all the additional transistor budget in the GP102 went to increase the speed in graphics and other calculations based on the FP32 data format. The standalone SM (Streaming Multiprocessor) in the GP102 and GP104 contains 128 CUDA cores for FP32 operations, four FP64-compatible cores, and one core capable of executing two FP16 instructions simultaneously. In addition, SM includes 40 texture mapping units, 96 KB of shared memory and 48 KB of L1 cache.

In total, the GP102 contains 30 SM units, which together provide a configuration of 3840 single-precision CUDA cores and 240 texture units. The back-end of the pipeline is represented by twelve 32-bit GDDR5/5X memory controllers (384-bit bus), each of which is associated with 8 ROPs and a 2 KB L256 cache section (3072 KB for the entire GPU).

A special feature is the memory, which has an unusual capacity of 11 GB. The reason lies in the reduction of the memory bus from 384 to 352 bits. One of the biggest innovations of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is its fast GDDR5X memory. NVIDIA worked closely with memory manufacturer Micron to speed up GDDR5X memory, familiar to us from the GeForce GTX 1080 video card. NVIDIA was able to improve the quality and integrity of signals, as a result, it was possible to increase clock speeds from 1.250 MHz to 1.375 MHz.

But instead of a 384-bit memory interface GPU GP102, NVIDIA chose a 1080-bit interface for the GeForce GTX 352 Ti. As a result, the memory bandwidth was 484 GB/s – even slightly faster than NVIDIA Titan X. The number of raster pipelines also decreased from 96 to 88 due to the reduced memory bus width.

The base frequency of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition is 1.480 MHz, the Boost frequency must be at least 1.582 MHz. But the actual frequency depends on the temperature and can reach 1.900 MHz.

In modern Pascal architecture, the memory interface is divided into 32-bit blocks. In the full version of the chip, the memory interface is 384-bit, but in the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti NVIDIA disabled one 32-bit block, as a result we get 352 bits. Each 32-bit block is responsible for connecting the memory chip. 352 bit/32 bit gives 11 channels or 11 GDDR5X memory chips.
