Xbox Top Manager Offers Laid-Off Workers ChatGPT for Comfort
Xbox Game Studios Publishing Executive Producer Matt Turnbull suggested using ChatGPT and Copilot as a means of support after layoffs. In his LinkedIn post, he called the current situation in the industry extremely difficult and added that “no one should go through a layoff alone.” In his opinion, LLM tools can reduce emotional and cognitive load, arising after job loss.
Turnbull compiled list of hints that can be given to AI, to help with resumes, career planning, and job searches. It includes prompts like “help me create a 30-day plan for when I get fired,” “rewrite my LinkedIn profile to highlight leadership skills,” or “help me overcome impostor syndrome after getting fired.” The producer claims that AI can speed up the restoration of confidence and guide a person in the right directionwhen there are few resources for decision making.
However, the publication caused a wave of criticism and was removed shortly after its publication. Users found the advice heartless, especially in light of news that Microsoft to lay off about 9000 employees, mainly in the gaming division. However, Turnbull himself did not lose his job and in the end called on those fired to share their experience with his network of contacts.
There was also a strong reaction to the fact that Microsoft to Invest Up to $80 Billion in AI Infrastructure Development, which many perceive as an attempt to replace humans with neural networks. A comment from Necrosoft Games CEO Brandon Sheffield reflects the general sentiment of critics: “After thousands of people are laid off, maybe you shouldn’t tell them to turn to the thing you’re trying to replace them with for solace.”
