Squadron 42 May Come to Consoles - CIG Looking for Animators with PS5 and Xbox Series Experience
Cloud Imperium Games, the studio behind Star Citizen and Squadron 42, has job openings Cinematic Animator for the Frankfurt and Manchester offices. The requirements for candidates explicitly state the presence of experience developing for current or next generation gaming consoles, which may indicate that versions are being prepared not only for PC.
Although Cloud Imperium Games has previously officially emphasized that both projects are being developed exclusively for PC, and director Chris Roberts has stated that Star Citizen's ambitions would not be possible without the platform, that could change. Squadron 42 - Single-player story campaign - could potentially come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, especially given the 2026 release window and significant advances in console hardware power.
Squadron 42 is positioned as cinematic sci-fi action film with elements of drama, starring Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn, and Andy Serkis. A recent demo at CitizenCon showed off some fresh gameplay footage, as well as confirming the campaign's planned release in 2026. The announcement of a search for animators with console experience may be part of the transition phase., as new platforms (or their successors expected by 2027–2028) may provide the necessary technical conditions.
It is important to note that this is not about Star Citizen, the multiplayer part, which relies on a complex network architecture. It was recently reported that Cloud Imperium lost several key engineers involved in server meshing technology, on which the seamless loading of star systems depends. However, this will not affect single player Squadron 42, where similar technologies are not used.
