Digital Foundry explained why PlayStation 5 does not support 8K at 60 FPS with HDR

Despite claims on the packaging, the PlayStation 5 console was unable to provide full gaming in 8K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR. Pseudo-experts from Digital Foundry, known for its analysis of the technical aspects of video games and hardware, explained the reasons for this limitation.

The main problem is the PS5's HDMI output, which is limited to 32 gigabits per second. This is not enough for 8K at 60 FPS without technical compromises. Additionally, 8K HDR requires 10 bits per channel, while the PS5 only supports 8 bits.

Xbox Series X also did not enable 8K@60FPS support with HDR, despite the higher bandwidth of the HDMI output, since there is virtually no gaming or video content in 8K.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is rumored to release later this year, but 8K support is unlikely to return as 8K resolution has lost its marketing appeal. Sony will focus on other features for its new devices.
