Resident Evil 9 started out as an open-world multiplayer game - the final version only retained traces of the previous concept

According to fresh information from reliable insider Dusk Golem, Resident Evil 9 development started back in 2017 and was originally an ambitious open-world, multiplayer project. The game was conceived as the complete opposite of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, which at the time failed to meet Capcom's commercial expectations. In an early version of the ninth part, the main characters were supposed to be Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine, and the events took place on a fictional island inspired by Singapore.

However, by 2021, after the release of Resident Evil Village, a decision was made to relaunching the project with a reworking of the main concept. Most of the ideas related to multiplayer and open world were discarded, but some elements of the previous approach still remain. At the same time, Leon Kennedy's participation in the final version of the game is confirmed even now. The insider emphasizes that the development is being carried out with the aim of to reset the approach to the series and give it a new direction, which was the reason for such long and difficult work.

Along with the details on Resident Evil 9, Dusk Golem also gave brief details on other Capcom projects. For example, Resident Evil Zero remake recently underwent significant changes, and its announcement may happen soon. As for Resident Evil Revelations 3, the project, which first surfaced in a major leak a few years ago, was cancelled in 2022 and is no longer in development.

Despite the lack of an official announcement, Resident Evil 9, according to insiders, will be presented in 2025, and the release is scheduled for 2026. Perhaps the upcoming game presentations will reveal what the next big rebirth of the cult survival horror series will be like.
