Spectral Compute introduces "SCALE" allowing CUDA to run on AMD GPUs

UK startup Spectral Compute has introduced "SCALE", a GPGPU toolchain that allows NVIDIA's CUDA to run on AMD GPUs without the need to port code. This is an important step in breaking NVIDIA's dominance in software.

SCALE by Spectral Compute

SCALE has been in development for seven years and is independent of NVIDIA code, creating its own CUDA-compatible toolchain. Spectral Compute CEO Michael Sondergaard believes that GPUs should have an open environment similar to modern processors, and that SCALE serves as a bridge between CUDA programming and other hardware vendors. This resource allows developers to work with one version of code, eliminating the need for translation into other languages.

Spectral Compute has tested the software in various applications such as Blender, XGboost and FAISS using AMD's RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures. However, SCALE is not open-source; it can be accessed through a free software license.

NVIDIA has shown dissatisfaction with the resources that allow CUDA to run on external components. CUDA has played a huge role in NVIDIA's dominance in the AI markets, and the company will not allow the exclusivity of its software to be lost.

AMD confirms Zen 6 and Zen 6C architectures

AMD has officially announced the development of the following processor architectures - Zen 6 and Zen 6C, which will be the next steps in the evolution of the Zen line. These architectures will continue the path of high-performance solutions and will be used in various platforms such as desktops, laptops, portable devices and servers.

AMD Zen6

The Zen 6 architecture, codenamed Morpheus, promises even greater performance and energy efficiency. Zen 6 and Zen 6C will be built on more advanced technology than their predecessors. Zen 6 processors will find their way into the next generation EPYC "Venice", supporting the new SP7 platform and up to 16 memory channels. In addition, Zen 6 will be the basis for new Ryzen desktop processors, codenamed Medusa, which will feature RDNA GPU cores and use a 2.5D interconnect for increased bandwidth.

AMD also said that the Zen 6 architecture will offer processors with 8, 16, and 32 cores on a single CCD die, which will be useful for multi-threaded workloads, especially in the Threadripper and EPYC family. Development of Zen 7 has already begun, and Zen 6 is expected to debut in 2026. The company also plans to introduce XDNA 3 architecture for Versal client processors and accelerators by 2026.

AMD Ends Support for RDNA 4 GPUs on Linux

AMD is wrapping up support for its RDNA 4 GPUs on Linux with the latest round of bug fixes. AMD uses an "IP blocks" approach to ensure optimal support for the Linux architecture. From the very beginning, AMD has strived to ensure that the RX 8000 series is fully compatible with Linux, and by all accounts, this goal has been achieved.

The latest patch pack includes various updates for RDNA 4 IP blocks, such as VCN5 support for encoding, improvements to RT engines, and more. Important changes made in the latest Linux kernel 6.11 include:

  • Removing hardware support check for gfx12
  • Update gfxhub client ID for gfx12
  • Adding gfx12 register support to ipdump
  • Support for CP and GFX queues for gfx12 in ipdump

According to Phoronix, AMD has submitted the final patches for RDNA 4 ahead of the release of Linux 6.11. These fixes include improvements to the GFX12 IP blocks, which will allow RDNA 4 GPUs to work out of the box on the platform. The patch also includes fixes for the GFX11.5 architecture (RDNA 3.5), designed for Ryzen AI 300 processors, which will hit the market soon.

NVIDIA is preparing a special version of the GeForce RTX 5090 for the Chinese market

NVIDIA is expected to introduce the RTX 50 series by the end of this year, although the release could be pushed back to 2025. The company is reportedly planning to release the GeForce RTX 5090D in January 2025, which will be the successor to the RTX 4090D. The RTX 4090D was released in late 2024 to circumvent new US export restrictions on high-end GPUs. The main goal of the new model will be to reduce processing power to meet these limitations.

While launch is still months away and specifications may change, NVIDIA will be ready for this release. There may be changes to the BIOS to not limit the number of CUDA cores for gamers, but rather reduce performance in AI-related tasks, which is the main reason for these limitations.
