Minecraft gets RTX!

Minecraft, the all-time best-selling video game with over 176 million copies sold, gets a much more realistic experience with support for real-time ray tracing on PC.

image004

A free update to the game will provide all fans of the game with vivid visualizations of the created worlds with more realistic shadows, lighting and colors.

"Minecraft will bring the benefits of ray tracing to millions of gamers who don't play hardcore games," said Matt Wuebbling, director of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “The addition of ray tracing to a global bestseller demonstrates the success and recognition this technology has achieved in the gaming industry.”

“Ray tracing is the next evolution for Minecraft,” said Saxs Persson, Minecraft franchise director at Microsoft. - GeForce RTX will give you new sensations from the world of Minecraft. In regular Minecraft, the gold bar looks just yellow, but when you turn on ray tracing, you'll see highlights and reflections, and even characters being reflected."

NVIDIA and developer Mojang have added a version of the game under Windows 10 variation of ray tracing known as "path tracing". It simulates how light travels through a scene and provides a unified lighting calculation model for many types of effects that have traditionally been created separately using rasterization or hybrid rendering methods. These effects include:

direct light from the sun, sky, and various sources, including light-emitting surfaces such as glowing blocks or lava
realistic hard and soft shadows, depending on size, shape and distance to the light source
per-pixel emissive lighting
indirect diffuse lighting (diffuse global)
indirect glare (reflections)
transparent materials with reflection, refraction and scattering (frosted glass, water, ice)
atmospheric dispersion and density (volumetric fog, light shafts, realistic skies)

Real-time ray tracing is changing the way games are created and dramatically improving the image quality available. Ray tracing is built on a powerful ecosystem that includes support for the technology in industry-standard APIs, popular game engines, and games from major publishers.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ is the only GPU that can play games with ray tracing enabled.

New apps with RTX support

One year after the announcement of NVIDIA RTX™ technology at SIGGRAPH 2018, ray tracing has established itself as the new industry standard in design, architecture, games, effects and scientific visualization.

image003

The world's leading developers have already introduced over 40 applications with RTX support, enabling tens of millions of users to use ray tracing and artificial intelligence algorithms. Recently, all these technologies were too resource-intensive for interactive work. The list of 40 apps includes seven from leading independent developers that are being showcased this week at SIGGRAPH.

Companies using ray tracing include representatives from a wide range of industries: Pixar, Renault, New Balance, Woods Bagot and Siemens Healthineers. Leading game engines - Unity and Unreal Engine - support ray tracing with RTX. Visual computing giants such as Adobe, Autodesk, Blackmagic Design and Dassault Systèmes are also adding support for the technology.

“Designers, artists, hardware makers and software developers around the world have embraced real-time ray tracing and AI acceleration as the new industry standard for design and content creation,” said Greg Estes, vice president of corporate marketing and developer programs at NVIDIA. “The power of NVIDIA RTX is available both in RTX Studio laptops used by millions of content creators and in the data centers of global enterprises, enabling the creation of better products and more immersive entertainment, faster.”

Ray tracing calculates every photon of light in a scene as it interacts with materials and surfaces. This makes images more accurate and realistic than traditional computer graphics techniques. The NVIDIA RTX platform, which includes software tools and hardware acceleration for ray tracing and AI algorithms, enables real-time ray tracing for the first time.

RTX. On: Leading apps take content creation to new heights

RTX allows designers to interactively iterate on their product or model and see physically correct lighting, shadows and reflections. Digital artists working in the entertainment industry can apply the same techniques to their animations and visual effects.

RTX technology can also be used in servers for batch rendering of scenes that are difficult to render in real time, or for preliminary calculations of “light baking”, i.e. modeling how textures will look in certain environments for games and other interactive renderings. And AI acceleration makes it easier to remove noise, determine poses in space, and other tasks, providing new capabilities for animators and visual artists.

At SIGGRAPH, seven leading developers unveiled new NVIDIA RTX-enabled apps, including:

Adobe Substance Painter: RTX Ray Tracing Speeds Up Baking Up to 192X Faster Than Previously CPU.
Autodesk Flame: RTX Tensor Cores dramatically accelerate the new machine learning capabilities of Autodesk Flame v2020.1. Built-in machine learning-based analysis helps artists isolate, extract, and modify objects in footage, dramatically speeding up visual effects and compositing.
Blender Cycles: NVIDIA OptiX™ 7 with CUDA® greatly improves the speed of the open source renderer.
Dimension 5 D5 Fusion: RTX ray tracing in UE4's implementation allows architects and designers to quickly simulate lighting and shadows as if they were in reality.
Daz 3D Daz Studio: NVIDIA Iray® allows content creators to assemble scenes with interactive RTX-accelerated ray tracing to quickly realize their creative projects and render them at the highest quality.
Foundry MODO: RTX Performance with OptiX in Completely Redesigned Renderer MODO offers significantly faster rendering speeds than CPU.
Luxion KeyShot: RTX-accelerated ray tracing and AI denoising for photorealistic 3D data visualization for product design analysis, marketing, animation, illustration with OptiX in KeyShot 9.
These new products complement existing design and content creation applications that offer powerful RTX capabilities and high performance.

Popular applications like Adobe Dimension CC and Chaos Group V-Ray offer users a smooth, highly realistic experience thanks to RTX RT Cores. Adobe Substance users will see up to 800% performance gains over CPU when using RTX via DXR for light baking.

The latest version of BlackMagic Design DaVinci Resolve with DaVinci Neural Engine revolutionizes video production with NVIDIA AI libraries and Tensor Cores in GPU NVIDIA RTX for accelerated inference.

RTX everywhere

Less than a year has passed since RTX technology began to be used locally. All key 3D design applications in the world will receive RTX support by the end of the year. The entire gaming industry is also involved with its powerful ecosystem, including technology support in standard APIs such as DirectX 12 and Vulkan, as well as in leading game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine.

All major hardware manufacturers have introduced RTX-based systems. Designed for content creators, 27 RTX Studio laptops and mobile workstations offer desktop performance on the go. The new wave of high-performance RTX workstations is revolutionizing the work of millions of designers, artists, researchers and scientists, enabling them to render photorealistic scenes in real time and apply new AI algorithms.

Featuring fully optimized software stacks for OptiX RTX rendering, gaming, VR/AR, and professional visualization, NVIDIA RTX servers deliver cinematic-quality graphics enhanced by ray tracing at a fraction of the cost of rendering with GPUs. CPU with the same productivity.
