AMD CEO Lisa Su to speak at CES 2021 on January 12

Next year's Consumer Electronics Show will be different. The global pandemic has affected every popular computer and gaming trade show around the world, which has been either canceled or postponed. Earlier this year, the Consumer Technology Association announced that CES 2021 would be entirely digital, meaning there would be no public events with audiences.

AMD today announced that its CEO and current Dr. Lisa Su will deliver the keynote address at next year's event. The main performance will take place on January 12 and will last an hour. It is likely that the event will be pre-recorded as there is no information available on the live stream.

AMD is expected to unveil its Ryzen 5000 mobile processors codenamed Cezanne. At CES 2020, AMD announced the Ryzen 4000 Renoir series. The company is also planning to release the Navi 22 GPU for the Radeon RX 6700 series. CES 2021 could be a great opportunity to announce both products. AMD may also talk about the Threadripper 5000 series, which is based on the Zen3 architecture.

The company may also reveal its roadmap for the transition from socket AM4 to AM5. Both Intel and AMD are expected to begin rolling out the new DDR5 memory standard on their consumer desktop platforms, which will require entirely new processors.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is now "available"

Today NVIDIA introduces the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics card. This is a new model with the GA104 GPU, the same GPU as the RTX 3070 but with fewer cores.

The card is equipped with 4864 CUDA cores, 152 Tensor cores and 38 ray tracing cores. Compared to the RTX 3070, this model has fewer ROPs (80 vs. 96), but the model retains 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory bus. Memory speed is also unchanged, meaning the maximum bandwidth is 448 GB/s.

The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has a boost clock of 1665 MHz, which is actually the lowest clock speed of any previously released Ampere card.

Reviews show that this model has a higher price-to-performance ratio than all other RTX 30 graphics cards. There are many custom designs based on the new SKU (82 and up), check them out if you need to check what will be available for sale.

The Founders Edition has an MSRP of $399, but the custom design is expected to cost more. The card is available for sale from now on.

Steve and Tim from YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed finally sat down together after a long period of pandemic social distancing to discuss the Radeon RX 6800 series situation and many other topics.

The video covers the topic of non-existent Radeon RX 6800 stock and inflated prices for custom models. The cards that immediately sold out at MSRP were reference models. Many retailers didn't even bother to sell these cards online because their availability was so limited. Unfortunately, this situation did not change with the launch of custom maps a week later.

Retailers weren't even accepting pre-orders for these cards, and even if they did, the prices were simply horrendous and vastly higher than AMD's official suggested retail prices. This pricing situation was discussed in the HardwareUnboxed Q&A session.

It turns out that AMD has acknowledged that overpricing is an issue, and the manufacturer is already working to "allow" AIB to meet its MSRP target within two months. AMD's short and unofficial statement, which was paraphrased by HarwdareUnboxed, does not explain why there is a shortage of AMD GPUs and why prices for custom cards are so much higher, especially compared to NVIDIA cards at launch.

“We had a personal conversation with AMD. They assured us that in 4-8 weeks the AIB cards will be available at MSRP. They said they have allowed AIB to reach the [RX 6800 XT] MSRP of $649 and expect this to happen within 8 weeks."

The fake MSRP, which will only be available to early adopters of the reference models, obviously puts reviewers in a difficult position, as their dollar figures are simply misleading to customers who can't find these cards at those prices. As noted, this has been an issue with AMD launches for years, but the manufacturer has yet to resolve the issue.

The reason for the high price of Big Navi cards could be due to the limited supply of GPUs at launch, very low margins for AIB and retailers taking advantage of this situation.

This table of inflated prices for custom Radeon RX 6800 cards was recently published on Newegg. Hardly any of these cards were available for pre-order, and if they were, prices were $81-$251 above MSRP:

Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti EAGLE OC

The EAGLE OC is the only dual fan model shown in the video. This particular model is a factory overclocked model (Gigabyte also plans a variant without OC). The graphics card has a standard display output configuration and a single 8-pin power connector. The thickness of the structure is 2 slots.

Meanwhile, the GAMING OC PRO variant features a fully customizable PCB with dual power connectors (8+6 pins) and a 3-slot design (thicker than the non-PRO). Because the board is much longer, the power connectors are located much further back, which should make cable routing easier.

Gaming OC PRO has a boost clock of 1770 MHz, which is 105 MHz higher than NVIDIA.

     

     

Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti AORUS MASTER

The flagship model from the AORUS series also comes with a three-fan cooling system, but the fan diameter is larger than the GAMING series. This is because the middle fan is pushed behind the outer fans. This model also has custom power connectors (6+8 pin) and custom display outputs (3x DisplayPort + 3x HDMI).

There's a ton of information out there on the AMD Ryzen 5000U series, but it's all been linked to parts codenamed Lucienne (which are believed to be an update to the Renoir Zen2). On the other hand, Cezanne chips will be based on the Zen3 architecture, the same architecture found in the recently announced (but unlikely to be available) Ryzen 5000 series of desktop PCs.

AMD divides the Ryzen 5000U series into Lucienne and Cezanne. Some parts, such as the Ryzen 5 5500U or Ryzen 7 5700U, were based on Zen2. Meanwhile, the processor that was just spotted on Geekbench via Leakbench is the first Zen3 mobile processor, the Ryzen 7 5800U.

The base frequency of the processor is 1,9 GHz and the boost frequency is 4,4 GHz. According to previous reports, the base frequency should be 2,0 GHz, so we can't be sure whether this value is incorrect or the specifications have changed. Overall, you can expect a 200 MHz increase in overclock clock speed compared to the Ryzen 7 4800U “Renoir”. The Vega GPU cores will also be increased to 2,0 GHz from 1,75 GHz on the previous generation.
