Wolfenstein: Youngblood - The game takes place 19 years after the events of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, in an alternate 1980 in Paris captured by the Nazis. Unlike most previous games in the series, the main character is not BJ Blaskowicz, but his twin daughters Jess and Sophie, who went in search of their father. GAME ENGINE

The heart of Wolfenstein: Youngblood is id Tech 6. id Tech 6 is the game engine of the id Tech series, which is currently being developed by the American company id Software and which became the successor to id Tech 5. Initially, in 2008, it was stated that the engine would use innovative technology "Sparse Voxel Octree". The game level geometry supported by this technology had to have a voxel structure rather than a polygonal one, that is, geometric objects had to consist of voxels. After the departure of John Carmack from id Software and the arrival of Thiago Souza from Crytek, the vector of engine development changed - the priority became the rational use of existing technologies instead of offering innovative ones. At this point, it is obvious that the engine, like its ancestor and many other engines, uses a polygonal geometry structure.

The engine was developed for the eighth generation of consoles in order to obtain a modern and effects-rich picture at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. id Tech 6 differs from its predecessor in a full-fledged dynamic lighting system, as well as a variety of effects (HDR bloom, motion blur, screen space reflection (SSR), temporal antialiasing, bokeh). The engine uses a combination of forward and deferred rendering - according to Thiago Sousa, this method allows you to use the best properties of both approaches.

To achieve high performance on consoles, the engine includes support for adaptive resolution. The essence of the technology is that the rendering resolution is reduced when a certain load on the video core is reached in order to ensure a stable number of frames per second. This technology has already been used in id Tech 5, but there are differences in implementation. In the previous version of the engine, only the horizontal resolution was changed while the vertical resolution remained the same. For example, if the base resolution is 1280x720, under load it could smoothly drop to 1024x720, while the aspect ratio remained the same - the image was stretched in width. In id Tech 6, the rendering resolution changes completely, since the processing methods used (blur, anti-aliasing TSSAA 8TX, etc.) are designed to produce a soft image without artifacts characteristic of 3D game graphics, and preserving a square pixel is better suited for this concept.

Also, the id Tech 6 engine inherited MegaTexture technology from its predecessor. Thanks to the increased amount of memory on the new consoles, the problem with slow loading of textures on level geometry was solved. On PC, the render engine traditionally uses the OpenGL API for id Software, but API support has also been added for the first time Vulkan.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 maximum game's default graphics quality settings. 4 GB cards do not work with these settings, and even 6 GB cards experience some problems... DLSS technology was tested in Quality.

VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on the results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with different anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the schedule at the request of the reader.

I’ll tell you, using the example of the last Wolf, where they put retracing in, I played through almost the entire game without it, then tried it with it, in 4k it’s playable with retracing only if you activate the dlss, the only game where this feature is implemented correctly and there is practically no deterioration in graphics. The game is so dynamic that you don’t even notice the retracing, you just need to know where he is and where to look)) And he’s in the puddles, he’s in the reflections in the shop windows, the only location where the change in the picture is really immediately noticeable is Laboratory X, everything is reflected there on the floors and walls.
