The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux - PC performance graphics benchmarks of Graphics Cards
BASIC GAME INFORMATION |
Genre:Adventure
developer: The Astronauts
Publisher: The Astronauts
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person mystery adventure game. No fights or explosions, only study and research, only the search for truth. You will play as detective Paul Prospero, who received a strange letter from Ethan Carter. Suspecting that the boy is in mortal danger, Paul comes to his home, where everything turns out to be much worse than Paul could have imagined. Instead of Iten, he discovers traces of brutal murders, which he must sort out.
Changes in the new version of the game |
The Astronauts studio has transferred its adventure game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter to the Unreal Engine 4. A free update, called Redux, is available on Steam to all owners of the original. The previous version of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, released on PC, was created based on Unreal Engine 3, according to The Astronauts website. With the transition to a new engine, the game's graphics were expectedly updated and several more interesting changes appeared.
1 - Shadows have become much more real and softer
2 - Reflections in the water are real. Walk across the bridge and look at the puddles. They reflect the location, and in the old version - some kind of spot...
3 - No small friezes when loading a location
4 - Development of objects
5 - water rendering, much more real
Firstly, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter now saves progress after every important action performed by the player. And after loading, the game will start from where it left off. In the original, let us remind you, you had to play from the last checkpoint.
In addition, in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux, transitions between locations are almost imperceptible, whereas in the previous version of the engine there were slight hitches at this moment.
The developers said that they plan to add support for Direct X 12 to the game. “Work in this direction is already underway, we even have a version for Direct X 12, but it is still too raw to show it to players,” explained the game’s creative director Adrian Chmielazz .
Comparison of game build differences |
The graphics settings in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux have increased slightly, but we won’t see anything major:
Below we have provided screenshots comparing the old and new versions of the game:
Comparison of game versions |
The picture in both versions of the game is almost identical, except that the range in the original is higher...
Resolution comparison |
At 200% resolution, the picture becomes much clearer and more detailed, but performance drops noticeably.

GPU test |
All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:
Our graphics cards were tested at separate screen resolutions of 1920x1080, 2560x1600, and 3840x2160 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux, with a resolution of 100 and 200%. Multi-GPU game configurations are not supported.
Testing at resolution 1920x1080 |
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080
With these settings acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the level Radeon HD 7850 or GeForce GTX 750 Ti.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080 200%
With these settings acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the level Radeon R9 290 or GeForce GTX 780. The optimal solutions would be Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 970.
Testing at 2560x1600 resolution |
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560x1600
With these settings An acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the RadeonR7 370 or GeForce GTX 660 level. The optimal solutions will be Radeon HD 7950 or GeForce GTX 670.
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560x1600 200%
With these settings An acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti level.
Testing at resolution 3840x2160 |
Testing at maximum quality settings 3840x2160
With these settings An acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the level of Radeon R9 290 or GeForce GTX 780. The optimal solutions will be Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 980.
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.
Testing at maximum memory GPU quality settings
The recommended amount of video memory usage for a resolution of 1920x1080 will be 2048 MB of video memory, for a resolution of 2560x1600 - 3076 MB of video memory, and for a resolution of 3840x2160 about 3076 MB of video memory. The recommended amount of video memory usage at a resolution of 200% for a resolution of 1920x1080 will be 3096 MB of video memory, for a resolution of 2560x1600 - 4096 MB of video memory and for a resolution of 3840x2160 about 6144 MB of video memory.
CPU test |
We tested processor dependence on 16 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the video card value for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080 70%
CPU performance in the gaming benchmark is sufficient for all models.
Loading of processor coresat maximum quality settings 1920x1080 Intel%
Loading of processor cores at maximum quality settings 1920x1080 AMD%
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is capable of supporting up to 6 threads, but fully utilizes 4 cores.
RAM test |
The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 5960X@4.6 GHz with 16GB DDR4 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. The entire used operational memory was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).
Testing the game's RAM consumption at various quality settings
As we can see, with various quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is at the level of 2600 megabytes.
Testing system RAM consumption
On a 6GB system, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux consumes about 4.1GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 4.3 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, the total memory consumption was almost 5.1 GB. And with 32 gigabytes of RAM, the system consumes 6 gigabyte of RAM.
