As the title suggests, the main character is stuck in the forest as a result of a plane crash. To stay alive, you will have to cut down trees, build shelter, get food, create fire to keep warm, and set traps; for, you see, this is not an ordinary forest, but a forest inhabited by bizarre mutants.

THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

The Forest is supported by the major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by the developers and will not receive support.

Game engine 

The cross-platform Unity engine became the technical basis of The Forest project. Unity is a multi-platform tool for developing 3D and 360D applications and games, running on the Windows and OS X operating systems. Applications created using Unity run on the Windows, OS X, Windows Phone, Android, Apple iOS, Linux operating systems, as well as on game consoles Wii, PlayStation XNUMX and Xbox XNUMX.

It is possible to create Internet applications using a special plug-in for the Unity browser, as well as using an experimental implementation within the Adobe Flash Player module. Flash support was later dropped. Applications built with Unity support DirectX and OpenGL.

Advanced Game Settings

The Forest is supposed to have a wide range of graphic settings. But due to the fact that the game is still in the alpha version stage, changing the settings at the moment does not affect the quality of graphics or performance. Judging by allma, the game uses maximum graphics quality settings.

The Forest looks pretty good in 4K, although it does require a ton of processing power.

General visual design and game physics

 The Forest is currently a game open for pre-order at the early alpha testing stage. The very fact that the game is officially version 0.1 suggests that the final stage of the project is still very, very far away. So we are patient and wait for the game to fully express itself.

But even what we currently have now may indicate that we have before us one of the most striking survival projects that has appeared in the near future. The picture in the game is quite good, especially considering the support for DirectX 9, the environment is very well designed, and the effects are very nice. But the presence of some bugs still reminds us of the crudeness of the product.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:    

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 with the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by The Forest (and of course, the only ones available for use). SLI and CrossFireX are not currently supported by the game.

With these settings an acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 6870 or GeForce GTX 560 level. The optimal video cards would be Radeon HD 6970 or GeForce GTX 570 and above.

With these settings an acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon R9 270 or GeForce GTX 660 level. The optimal video cards would be Radeon HD 7970 or GeForce GTX 680 and above.

With these settings an acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the level of Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 780. The optimal video cards will be solutions GeForce GTX TITAN and above.

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.

Micro-Stuttering Test

Introducing our testing of FPS output latency on a Micro-Stuttering monitor. The indicator was based on the results on multi-chip configurations of video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum image quality settings.

We tested processor dependence on 15 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.

The game can support up to 6 computing threads, but can only fully utilize 4 cores.

RAM test

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 3970X@4.9 GHz with 16GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. The entire used operational memory was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).

On a 4GB system, The Forest consumes about 3.3GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 3.5 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, system memory consumption was almost 4.1 gigabytes.

<br />То есть, игра чем-то грузит несколько ядер (или притворяется), а на самом деле большую часть своих задач выполняет на 1,5 ядрах. Результат i7 3970X, имхо, это подтверждает.
