The First Templar - PC performance graphics benchmarks of Graphics Cards

TFT_2011_05_09_22_10_53_021

Year: 2011
Genre: Action (Slasher) / 3D / 3rd Person
Developer: Haemimont Games
Publisher: Kalypso Media

The First Templar will magically take us back to the 13th century in France during the reign of King Philip the Fourth. There are two characters at once as the main characters. One is a member of the Templar Order, who suddenly became disillusioned with his “mentors and leaders” (corruption, betrayal, murder - the list of sins is long!) and went to war against the order. The other is a girl of noble blood, whom the Inquisition called a heretic and is now going to burn at the stake. This couple is destined to reveal all the terrible secrets of the Templar Order, play their role in a large “state conspiracy” and learn the secret of the “Holy Grail”.

Review: Playability

While waiting for the release of The First Templar, I was waiting for something similar to Enclave or Knights Of The Temple, action RPG released in 2003 and 2004 by Starbreeze Studios, let's see what happened next. The plot of the game develops during medieval Europe. A couple of heroes - Knights Templar - fight against representatives of the Inquisition, save the world in every possible way and solve other everyday problems. Albert, a knight of the Order, makes his way with brute force using a sword and shield, while his partner, Maria, relies on a lighter, elegant dagger and behaves more quickly in battle, albeit with less damage... but this does not give the enemy a reason to relax in battle with her.

TFT_2011_05_09_21_20_56_747

For Action RPG, the battle process is primitive - hit, hit, block, hit... for a powerful attack, just hold down the blow a little longer than usual and voila, the enemy is on the ground! In rare cases, the AI remembers that 2003 is long behind us and the seemingly defeated enemy gets up and sneakily tries to thrust a weapon into the back of one of the heroes, but this is effective only the first time, in the future we will check the downed ones and finish off...the enemy as no way... The combat system has a few more “surprises” in store, such as spectacular blows and techniques, but even those pop up only occasionally, they open up as the fighter is leveled up, and they look a bit too picturesque and forced.

TFT_2011_05_09_21_35_56_268

Regarding the graphics, I also want to argue with many comments on the network - it seems that the designers spent more time on drawing the characters than on all the levels, scenery and enemies... and perhaps not enough by modern standards. The environment looks poor, as if TES: Oblivion or Assassins' Creed never came out, even though I don't consider the second one a good game.

We invite you to evaluate part of the game walkthrough of The First Templar in Full HD resolution, where you can see for yourself the quality of this product:

It’s immediately noticeable that the game is focused more on co-op than on single-player, some places without a relationship with a partner would be impossible to complete at all, but this is more a tribute to fashion than a design move, in order to diversify the gameplay, Uncharted 2 is definitely on the developers’ shelf.

Review: Graphics

The First Templar is a multi-platform game that was released on PC and the Xbox 360 game console. Unfortunately, we were unable to find information about the game engine on the Internet. The game has a wide selection of graphic settings, so even those with not very modern hardware will probably not have any particularly serious problems with launching problems.

TFT_2011_05_09_21_29_30_212

The first thing that catches your eye is the motley graphic content of The First Templar. The character models and clothing detailing are quite detailed and look quite impressive. Closed locations, such as temples and dungeons, are also nicely designed and well detailed, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the dark Middle Ages... Light sources and fire effects are not up to modern standards, but still look very decent.

TFT_2011_05_09_21_54_25_143

The environment of the open locations, in contrast to what was said above, seems to be taken from another game, striking us with its woodenness and poverty. It feels like they started developing it first about five years ago, and subsequently forgot to adjust them to other graphical aspects of the game.

TFT_2011_05_09_21_27_32_849

The physics in the game is quite conditional and applies only to our characters and their opponents. A separate advantage is the implementation of NVIDIA 3D Vision AMD Eyefinity technologies in the game, which look very impressive, even despite the mediocre graphics, thus allowing you to raise it one level higher.

Less productive video cards up to the level of GeForce GTS 450 and Radeon HD 4870 are tested on the basis of Core 2 Quad Q9550 and Phenom II X4 940 BE processors, depending on the resource intensity of the game, and more productive ones are based on more powerful solutions. Overclocked versions of video cards presented by sponsors were equal to conventional analogues by reducing their clock speeds.

TFT_2011_05_09_12_06_59_708

Our video cards were tested at a resolution of 1920x1080 in normal mode and for NVIDIA 3D Vision technology and at a resolution of 5760x1080 for AMD Eyefinity. Using our graphs, you can evaluate how your video card behaves relative to other modern solutions in almost all modern visual modes. The game does not support Cross Fire and SLI technologies, so multi-chip Radeon HD 6990 or GeForce GTX 590 solutions use only half of their power.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080

1920_tft

At FuLL HD resolution 1920x1080, all our tested video cards, starting with the Radeon HD 3870 or GeForce 9800 GT, showed an acceptable level of performance. Based on the purchase of video cards specifically for this game, then currently the Radeon HD 5750 or GeForce GTS 450 look most preferable.

AMD Eyefinity Technology Testing

  TFT_2011_05_09_12_07_35_341

All our video cards were tested at maximum quality settings on three Full HD monitors combined thanks to Eyefinity technology in a resolution of 5760x1080. Even though the game has very mediocre graphics, all modern methods of displaying images on the screen work without problems.

Testing at maximum quality settings using AMD Eyefinity technology on two monitors at a resolution of 5760x1080

 5670_tft

With the use of Eyefinity technology on three monitors, the performance of AMD video cards is reduced within 50-60% of the standard mode, depending on the video cards model. The minimum that is needed for comfortable gaming at a resolution of 5760x1080 is a video card of the Radeon HD 5770 level. For comfortable gaming experience, we recommend the Radeon HD 5830 or higher model.

Testing using NVIDIA 3D Vision technology

TFT_2011_05_09_22_09_58_710

The 3D Vision drivers currently lack support and ratings for The First Templar, but despite this, the 3D quality is quite nice. Let us remind you that in 3D mode there is an internal frame limit of 60 FPS.

Testing at maximum quality settings using NVIDIA 3D Vision technology 1920x1080

 3d_tft

With the use of NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, the performance of NVIDIA video cards is reduced within 50-70% of the standard mode, depending on the video cards model. The minimum that is needed for comfortable 3D gaming at a resolution of 1920x1080 is a video card of the GeForce 9800 GTX level. The most optimal solution should be considered a video card of the GeForce GTX 260 class and higher.

CPU dependency testing

TFT_2011_05_09_12_06_37_301

We tested processor dependence on 9 models of basic configurations, which are the most relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, but this time at a resolution of 1280x1024 with maximum graphics quality settings.

Testing processor dependence at maximum quality settings 1280x1024

proz_tft

All tested processors were able to easily cope with the game The First Templar, showing quite a decent level of performance, the average of which for all models was above 100 FPS.

-_The_First_Templar The game is not something outstanding in the slasher genre and is a modest manifestation of it. Perhaps The First Templar is enough to while away an evening or two. The main advantage of the game is the cooperative mode and the almost complete absence of games of this genre on PC.
3_-_The_First_Templar The First Templar is about five years out of date in terms of graphics, but despite this, the game has a wide range of graphics settings and a good implementation of NVIDIA 3D Vision AMD Eyefinity technologies.
45_-_The_First_Templar

A huge advantage of the game is the very modest resource requirements of modern PCs, thanks to which many users will be able to set maximum graphics settings on almost any modern configuration.

We express our gratitude to all the manufacturing companies that were able to provide test equipment for our GPU tests and we hope that in the future their number will increase significantly!
