THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and Graphics API

STALKER: Call of Pripyat supports operating systems Windows XP, Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows Vista SP1, and also uses the DirectX 8, DirectX 9, and DirectX 11 graphics APIs at maximum settings to achieve the highest level of graphical quality. This allows the game to offer both basic graphics for less powerful systems, and improved visual effects and dynamic lighting for more powerful PCs. DirectX 11 provides significantly improved graphics quality, adding dynamic lighting and shadows, as well as highly detailed textures and effects, which makes the game world more realistic and atmospheric.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

"STALKER: Call of Pripyat" is the third game in the STALKER series, developed by the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World and released in 2009. The game is a direct sequel to "STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl" and completes the original trilogy. Development began shortly after the release of "STALKER: Clear Sky", with the goal of correcting the mistakes of the previous parts and offering players a more stable and high-quality product.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 49 13 941

The main idea was to create a game that would combine the best elements of the previous parts and offer new opportunities. The development team paid special attention to the community's feedback, striving to improve the plot, gameplay and technical component. The plot of "Call of Pripyat" is focused on the investigation of the failure of the military operation "Fairway", the goal of which was to establish control over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after opening the way to the center of the Zone.

The main character is Major Alexander Degtyarev, an SBU agent who was introduced into the Zone under the cover of a stalker. This allowed players to look at events from a new perspective and immerse themselves more deeply in the game world. The developers expanded and deepened the storyline, adding many side quests and non-linear developments.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 51 36 514

One of the priorities was to improve the stability and performance of the game. The team optimized the X-Ray Engine 1.6 game engine, eliminating many bugs and problems typical of the previous parts. Changes were made to the artificial intelligence system, weapon balance and economy, which made the gameplay more balanced and exciting.

The developers also added new locations that were previously unavailable in the series. The main action zones were Pripyat, Zaton and Yanov. These locations were carefully designed, based on real places and provided players with the opportunity to explore new territories with unique anomalies and dangers.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 55 22 276

During the development process, the team collaborated with the modding community and fans of the series. Players' suggestions and wishes were taken into account, which had a positive effect on the final product. The game went through beta testing stages, which allowed many errors to be identified and corrected before release.

"STALKER: Call of Pripyat" was released on October 2, 2009 in the CIS and later in other regions. The game received positive reviews from critics and players, who noted the improvements in stability, depth of the plot and atmosphere. The commercial success of the game strengthened GSC Game World's position in the market and confirmed the audience's interest in the series.

After the release, the developers continued to support the game, releasing patches and updates that further improved performance and fixed remaining bugs. "Call of Pripyat" became an important milestone for the STALKER series, cementing its cult status and influencing the further development of the genre.

GRAPHICS

In "STALKER: Call of Pripyat" the graphics component has been improved, although it has not undergone any radical changes compared to the previous part. Using the updated X-Ray Engine 1.6, the developers focused on optimization and detailing to provide a more stable and pleasant visual part without excessively increasing the system requirements.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 58 02 438

New lighting and shadow technologies were introduced, shader effects and textures were improved. Particular attention was paid to the detailing of the environment. New locations, such as the flooded city of Pripyat, the Zaton industrial zone and the Yanov station, were created with a high degree of realism and atmosphere. The developers used real photographs and materials to recreate the locations, which added authenticity to the game.

The dynamic weather and time of day system was improved, which affected not only the visuals but also the gameplay. Weather conditions could affect visibility, NPC behavior, and the dangers the player faced. For example, nighttime forays became more risky due to reduced visibility and mutant activity.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 58 41 626

Character and mutant models have been updated, new types of enemies and anomalies have been added. Animations have become smoother and more realistic, which has improved the overall impression of interaction with the surrounding world. Weapons and equipment have received more detailed models and textures, which has pleased fans of the genre.

Optimization of the graphics engine allowed players to enjoy improved graphics without a significant decrease in performance. The game was more stable and required fewer resources, which allowed for a wider audience and made the game available on a wider range of hardware.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 59 23 268

While the graphics weren't revolutionary for their time, the combination of optimizations and improvements allowed for a deep and atmospheric visual experience. Call of Pripyat was praised for its dark and immersive atmosphere, which became a hallmark of the STALKER series.

GAME ENGINE

For "STALKER: Call of Pripyat" the updated game engine X-Ray Engine 1.6 was used. The developers focused on improving the stability, performance and functionality of the engine, based on the experience of previous projects. The goal was to provide players with a high-quality gaming experience without the technical problems typical of the earlier parts of the series.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 59 52 280

One of the key improvements was the optimization of the engine code. Many bugs and errors that caused crashes and unstable game operation were eliminated. This allowed to reduce the number of technical problems and provide a smoother gameplay. The engine began to use system resources better, which had a positive effect on performance.

The NPC AI system was improved. Characters began to act more logically and realistically, interacting better with the environment and the player. This improved combat encounters and the overall feeling of interacting with the game world. Enemies could use tactics, cover, and work as a team.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 19 59 23 268

The physics engine also received updates. Ballistics models, object interactions, and anomaly behavior were improved. New types of anomalies and artifacts required the player to study and adapt, which added depth to the gameplay.

The engine supported DirectX 9 and 10, providing compatibility with various systems and allowing players to choose optimal graphics settings. This expanded the audience and made the game more accessible to users with different hardware configurations.

Modding support was maintained and even expanded. The developers provided tools and documentation that allowed the community to create their own modifications and add-ons. This extended the life of the game and contributed to the development of an active fan community.

xrEngine 2024 11 16 20 01 47 080

In general, the updated X-Ray Engine 1.6 has become more reliable and functional. It allowed to implement all the developers' intended ideas and ensure a high level of game quality. "STALKER: Call of Pripyat" has become an example of how experience and work on errors can lead to the creation of a stable and successful project.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

  • Minimum settings: At minimum settings, the game uses DirectX 8 and older graphics technologies. Texture and lighting quality are significantly simplified, allowing the game to run stably on older systems. Lighting and shadows in the game are static, visual effects are simplified, and there is significantly less detail in the textures of the environment and characters. Players may notice sharper shadow edges and less saturated color palettes.

  • Maximum settings with DirectX 11: At maximum settings using DirectX 11, the game's graphical quality is significantly improved. Realistic dynamic shadows, highly detailed textures, and global illumination effects are added, which significantly increases the atmosphere of the game world. DirectX 11 support allows the game to demonstrate spectacular effects such as more realistic reflections on surfaces, soft transitions of light and shadow, and advanced post-processing effects. These improvements make each scene of the game more cinematic and atmospheric, which is especially important for the feeling of anxiety and danger in the world of STALKER
