THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
SUPPORTED OS AND GRAPHICS API |
Serious Sam 4 supported Windows 7 / 8 /10
The priority and main graphics API for Serious Sam 4 is DX11/12/Vulkan.
GAME ENGINE |
The game is based on the Serious Engine 4.5 game engine. The Serious Engine 4 is a natural development of Croteam's previous technology, Serious Engine 3.5, used in the game Serious Sam 3: BFE.
The first mention of the engine appeared in June 2014, simultaneously with Croteam’s announcement of its new game, the 4D first-person philosophical puzzle game The Talos Principle. The press release announced that the new version of the engine allowed the developers to add scanned real objects into the game using proprietary photogrammetry technology. The announcement also said that in addition to personal computers, The Talos Principle will be released exclusively on the PlayStation XNUMX console.
In July 2014, Croteam CTO Alain Ladavac, in response to fan inquiries on the Steam forum, stated that Serious Engine 4 added a huge number of improvements compared to the previous iteration of the engine. Ladavac noted that the developers have made numerous improvements to improve the performance of the engine, and especially dramatic changes in terms of rendering more objects on the screen. Like Serious Engine 3.5, the new engine natively supports Direct3D 11. Alain also emphasized that most of the changes in the engine relate to technical aspects that are not noticeable at first glance, but overall it is much faster than its predecessor and has better rendering. According to him, Serious Engine 4 also uses accelerated multi-core rendering by default.
In August 2014, Alain Ladavac and studio programmer Dean Sekulic gave a short comment to the GamingBolt website. The developers said that The Talos Principle will run on PlayStation 4 at 1080p with 60 FPS. At the same time, the developers noted that a version for Xbox One is not yet planned, since Croteam has not yet received special development kits for this console.
On November 4, 2014, an interview appeared on the VentureBeat website in which the developers stated that one of the Croteam employees, back during the porting of Serious Sam 3: BFE to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, created a test bot for the game, which was subsequently significantly improved and added to The Talos Principle for testing the game to identify logical errors in puzzles. In total, this bot played about 15 man-hours, and, due to the software nature and speed of the bot, completing the entire game took him from 000 to 30 minutes. This technology allowed developers to significantly save time on game testing.
On November 6, 2014, the developers released a free demo of The Talos Principle called Public Test running on Serious Engine 4 to identify performance and launch issues with the game. It showed off the engine's new features and basic gameplay. Due to numerous complaints from players about headaches and nausea during the game, the developers added a special menu to The Talos Principle with settings to reduce the likelihood of motion sickness.
The Talos Principle was released on December 11, 2014. Critics noted the good optimization of the engine and the beautiful picture, as well as a rich number of additional graphics and performance settings. Soon the Serious Editor 4 was released, allowing you to create custom maps and modifications.
On May 28, 2015, The Talos Principle was released on Android devices. The game requires powerful devices such as Nvidia Shield to run. On October 13, 2015, the game was released on the PlayStation 4.
In January 2016, Alain Ladavac stated on the Steam forums that the studio's next game, Serious Sam 4, would use a much improved version of the Serious Engine 4.
On February 16, 2016, the open specification of the new graphics API was released Vulkan, on the same day its support was added to The Talos Principle. On October 17, 2016, Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope was released, introducing Serious Engine version 4.5.

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at ultra game graphics quality settings in DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Vulkan. Cards with 4 gigabytes of video memory in the API Vulkan From the very beginning, level loading crashes with errors. Cards with a large amount of video memory also have these problems, but they are less common.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX and GTX video cards are provided by LLC Business Development Center.
TEST GPU |
In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is performed on the most powerful CPU and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.
