"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" is a game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. As a sequel to the Ratchet & Clank series, the game was announced in June 2020 during the "The Future of Gaming" presentation for PS5.
1. Development history
As always, the history of game development begins with its origins in the minds of the developers. Insomniac Games already had experience with the Ratchet & Clank franchise, having created several successful games before. After the success of "Ratchet & Clank" in 2016, the team began to think about the next step.
The main idea for "Rift Apart" arose after demonstrating the technological capabilities of the PS5. In particular, the SSD drive of the new console made it possible to quickly change game worlds, which became a key feature of “Rift Apart”. This became the starting point for developing the story and gameplay.
During the development process, the team faced a number of challenges. One of them was the need to adapt the game engine to take advantage of the PS5's capabilities, including the SSD, graphics chip and DualSense controller. Another challenge was the development of a new character, Lombax Rivet, which required careful work by the designers and writers.
2. Game engine
"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" was developed on an updated version of the Insomniac Engine, which was adapted for PS5. Engineers from Insomniac have done significant work to optimize the engine for the new console.
One of the key features of the PS5 is its SSD storage, which allows you to load data much faster than a regular hard drive. This made it possible to instantly switch between game worlds, which became a key feature of the game. This required changing the way data was loaded and stored to provide unprecedented speed.
In addition, the Insomniac Engine has been adapted to use the new PS5 graphics chip, creating an even more detailed and realistic world. The game uses ray tracing technology to display realistic light and reflections, as well as dynamic resolution to ensure stable frame rates.
Finally, Insomniac used the new capabilities of the DualSense controller to create a more immersive experience in the game. By using haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, they were able to give players a more tangible experience when interacting with the game world.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart confidently captured the hearts of fans on PlayStation 5, thanks to stunning graphics, dynamic gameplay and exquisite use of the PS5 SSD to instantly change worlds. And now, the game has come to a new platform - PC, which promises serious changes and additional features.
Features of the PC version of the game
The game was originally designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the PS5, including superior ray tracing, exceptional loading speeds thanks to the SSD, and innovative features of the DualSense controller. However, like any game coming to PC, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is expected to receive a number of improvements and options specific to that platform.

Ray tracing and graphics card support: Nixxes Software is actively working on ray tracing support for AMD graphics cards. The reasons for the lack of this support at the time of release are not specified, but it may be due to technical difficulties or differences in the hardware architecture. At the same time, users of NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics accelerators will be able to use ray tracing immediately after the release, and will also have access to NVIDIA's proprietary technologies, including DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), Reflex (reduces system latency in games) and RTX IO (accelerates loading and decoding of textures using GPU).
