"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" is a game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. As a sequel to the Ratchet & Clank series, the game was announced in June 2020 during the "The Future of Gaming" presentation for PS5.

1. Development history

As always, the history of game development begins with its origins in the minds of the developers. Insomniac Games already had experience with the Ratchet & Clank franchise, having created several successful games before. After the success of "Ratchet & Clank" in 2016, the team began to think about the next step.

The main idea for "Rift Apart" arose after demonstrating the technological capabilities of the PS5. In particular, the SSD drive of the new console made it possible to quickly change game worlds, which became a key feature of “Rift Apart”. This became the starting point for developing the story and gameplay.

During the development process, the team faced a number of challenges. One of them was the need to adapt the game engine to take advantage of the PS5's capabilities, including the SSD, graphics chip and DualSense controller. Another challenge was the development of a new character, Lombax Rivet, which required careful work by the designers and writers.

2. Game engine

"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" was developed on an updated version of the Insomniac Engine, which was adapted for PS5. Engineers from Insomniac have done significant work to optimize the engine for the new console.

One of the key features of the PS5 is its SSD storage, which allows you to load data much faster than a regular hard drive. This made it possible to instantly switch between game worlds, which became a key feature of the game. This required changing the way data was loaded and stored to provide unprecedented speed.

Features of the PC version of the game

The game was originally designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the PS5, including superior ray tracing, exceptional loading speeds thanks to the SSD, and innovative features of the DualSense controller. However, like any game coming to PC, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is expected to receive a number of improvements and options specific to that platform.

  1. Ray tracing and graphics card support: Nixxes Software studio is actively working on ray tracing support for AMD video cards. The reasons for the lack of this support at the time of release are not specified, but it may be due to technical difficulties or differences in hardware architecture.  Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes 1920x1080, 2560x1440 и 3840x2160 with maximum graphics quality settings. In most cases, when changing the resolution, we restarted the game in order to get more or less adequate results, since the most common performance drop is a lack of video memory when changing the resolution... AMD video cards currently do not have support for ray tracing in the game.

There are FPS drops on any combination of settings/hardware. Specifically, the reflex does not affect stability in any way, the trick with changing the resolution does not help in any way, and can make it several times worse, since the buffer overflows and becomes completely unplayable. The whole problem is the presence of usable portals, if they exist, then there will be friezes, io does not export instant loads, so at such moments the load on the GPU drops with the appearance of friezes. There are fewer different friezes in the version with fg+reflex, more in the native without reflex. And so the problem is in ds, try to delete two of its files from the folder, map loading drops and gameplay stutters immediately disappear, but on portals they become slightly larger. Reflex and generation have nothing to do with it at all)
