When humanity faced the threat of destruction from the collision of the Earth with a giant asteroid, the leaders of all nations decided to create special arks in which the chosen ones would find refuge deep under the surface of the planet... It is they who must revive life on Earth after the danger has passed. You are among the chosen ones. Years after the disaster, the arks have opened, and you find yourself in a world that is very different from the previous one. But the most important thing is that not all its inhabitants are happy about your return. You need to learn to fight and survive. Keep in mind that there is very little time - bandits, mutants and even the local government are already on your trail.

Review: Playability

The game's plot is old-fashioned and fairly standard. A giant asteroid falls to the earth, and we are the lucky one who is lucky enough to be among the chosen ones in the cryogenic chamber. Waking up after a long sleep, we discover that we are left alone and begin the struggle for existence in a new and cruel world.

These capsules should automatically rise to the surface several years after the collision with the asteroid. In 2029, Apophis collides with Earth, destroying entire cities and countries. More than 80% of the world's population dies. “Nuclear winter” begins. Five years later, in 2035, the dust has finally settled and the survivors begin to rebuild the destroyed world.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world that is similar to the world featured in the films Mad Max and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, as well as the games Fallout 3 and Borderlands. Racing gameplay was influenced by games such as MotorStorm and Burnout. Having woken up, we immediately rush into the thick of things, gradually turning into a super mutant killer and an unsurpassed racer.

Despite the fact that the game has an open world, everything looks quite straightforward. There are no detours in the wastelands, and we can only move along pre-prepared roads in the crevices of the canyons. The open game world does not look very lively - all the game characters and their actions are very static and it turns out that the entire main focus is on the action component and crazy races, which look quite impressive.

We invite you to evaluate part of the game walkthrough of RAGE in HD resolution, where you can see for yourself the quality of this product:

RAGE, in fact, is a good project, but it was a little late in its release and all its charm has long been shown in such high-profile projects as Fallout 3 and Borderlands. However, it still has some zest that makes you play the game further and further, plunging headlong into the endless shooting and racing competitions...

Review: Graphics

The game is based on the id Tech 5 game engine, which was developed by id Software. The name of the engine - "id Tech 5" - follows the new naming scheme adopted by id Software. This diagram, unlike the previous one, provides information about the generation of the engine (for example, the “Doom 3 engine” engine is now called “id Tech 4”). "id Tech 5" is the fifth engine in the id Tech series and is cross-platform software designed for use on personal computers and Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles.

The engine uses advanced MegaTexture technology, which uses a texture with a resolution of up to 128.000 x 128.000 pixels (16 times larger than the last version of id Tech 4, which used a 32.768 x 32.768 pixel texture). One of the features of the renderer is the use of penumbra in shading, which is achieved using shadow maps. This is unlike the id Tech 4 engine's shading method, where shadows are produced with very sharp edges. Id Tech 5 uses open and cross-platform OpenGL as its API, rather than Direct3D.

The main target platform for the game is consoles, so you shouldn’t count on a great picture. The graphics left a very mixed impression - for example, on some models, mainly characters and vehicles, the picture is very nice and full of detailed textures. In the rest of the surroundings, one can see complete squalor and poverty - when approaching, it is impossible to even distinguish the inscriptions on the walls and only the outlines of objects placed around are visible. The picture of the wasteland canyons is very nice, but as soon as you get closer to some stone, everything cheerfully dissolves into oblivion... The sky in the game is static and pleases only with a beautiful background picture.

It's very annoying to constantly load the textures of locations that are literally drawn on the go... A few days after the release, a patch was released that expanded the game's graphic settings. In fact, it did not bring any improvement in graphics quality, only finer tuning for various gaming systems. We hope that in the future the developers will release a patch with higher textures, which will improve the visual content of RAGE.

Review: Resource-intensive game

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The minimum and average frame size is taken as the performance indicator. Below is the configuration of our test systems.

Less productive video cards up to the level of GeForce GTS 450 and Radeon HD 4870 are tested on the basis of Core 2 Quad Q9550 and Phenom II X4 940 BE processors, depending on the resource intensity of the game, and more productive ones are based on more powerful solutions. Overclocked versions of video cards presented by sponsors were equal to conventional analogues by reducing their clock speeds.

Our video cards were tested at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings. NVIDIA 3D Vision technology has not been tested due to the lack of official OpenGL-based support. AMD Eyefinity works without any problems, and the only obstacle when using it is the large amount of video memory. The efficiency of SLI is zero, but Cross Fire still manages to drive FPS into negative values relative to the use of one video cards. The game has an internal frame limit of 60 FPS.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080

At maximum graphics quality settings, a decent level of performance in the game will be shown by a Radeon HD 3870 or GeForce 9800 GT. More comfortable performance will be provided by cards of the Radeon HD 4770 or GeForce GTS 250 level. The game has the ability to slow down somewhat even at a stable 30 FPS, so for greater gaming smoothness we We recommend having a Radeon HD 4870 or GeForce GTX 280 on board.

AMD Eyefinity Technology Testing

All our video cards were tested at maximum quality settings on three FuLL HD monitors combined thanks to Eyefinity technology in a resolution of 5760x1080. The technology works without any problems, but for maximum quality video memory you will need at least 2 gigabytes on board.

Testing at maximum quality settings using AMD Eyefinity technology on three monitors at a resolution of 5760x1080

The minimum that is required for passable playability in Eyefinity mode is a video card of the Radeon HD 6950 level. For comfortable playability in this mode, video accelerators of the Radeon HD 6970 level or higher will be required.

CPU dependency testing

We tested processor dependence on 10 models of basic configurations, which are the most relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum quality settings.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080

All of our tested processor models are capable of handling the game without any problems. Our dual-core models were almost 100% loaded, so it is desirable to have a quad-core processor for the game.

RAGE left a very pleasant impression, even taking into account the fact that it is similar to most modern games.

The graphics in the game are quite mediocre - on the one hand, they’re nothing at all, and they look quite up to par, but on the other hand, they simply amaze you with their poverty...

Optimization at first glance is nothing, for most modern hardware it does not represent anything beyond the real, but some bugs and shortcomings are simply infuriating...

We express our gratitude to all the manufacturing companies that were able to provide test equipment for our GPU tests and we hope that in the future their number will increase significantly!
