Project Giana Demo test GPU
Year of construction: 2012
Genre: Arcade (Platform) / 3D
developer: Black Forest Games
Publisher: Black Forest Games
A remake of the 1987 arcade game, resurrected from the ashes by a group of ex-employees of the now closed Spellbound Entertainment. Read more about the project in our news, and in the demo version you will find two levels. The first is simply a journey between worlds; here you can evaluate the capabilities of Giana and her “gothic” alter ego in both universes. The second one is closer to classic “platformers”; it will take us closer to the end of the game and make us stretch our fingers.
Project Giana is a platformer in which the main character finds herself imprisoned in a fictional world of rainbows and shadows. Like the world, Giana has two faces - good and evil, which you can switch between at any time. At the same time, not only the girl, but also her environment changes, allowing her to overcome obstacles along the way.
THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
Supported OS and graphics API |
Project Giana is supported by major operating systems Windows, which includes XP, Vista and Windows 7. Other operating systems are not currently supported by developers and are unlikely to receive support. Although this is a demo version and in the future the developers may change their minds...
The priority and main graphics API for the PC version is DirectX 9 and 11.
Game engine |
The Project Giana game engine is a product of Black Forest Games' own development. The engine was created to run on a PC, which made it possible to obtain support DirectX 11.
Unfortunately, we could not find more detailed information about the game engine, except for these press releases.
Advanced Game Settings |
Project Giana has several acceptable levels of graphics settings, where you can manually set the graphic parameters we need. The settings are made in the game launcher immediately before launching the game.
Below we have provided screenshots of the game at various graphics settings, where our readers can see the difference between minimum, medium and high graphics quality settings.

As we can see, the graphics at different quality settings practically do not change, and only at low settings is there a noticeable deterioration in the picture.
General visual design and game physics |
What can I say - Project Giana is a very good platformer with very stylish and nice graphics. Although this is not on topic, I would like to add that the music in the game is very well matched to the gameplay style of the game character - in the game calm classical music plays for the good hero, and an original rock remix for the evil one.
The controls in the game are more tailored to a game controller, so for complete enjoyment and immersion in the gameplay, we recommend using it. The Havok physics engine is responsible for the physics in Project Giana, the resources of which are quite sufficient for this gameplay.
Well, then we will move directly to gaming tests and determine what impact this game has on modern computer hardware.

Test GPU |
All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average FPS was taken as a performance indicator. Below is a video of a test segment for video cards:
Our graphics cards were tested at separate screen resolutions of 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with Project Giana's ultra-high graphics quality settings. Demo. SLI does not work, but CrossFireX does, but due to its low resource dependence it does not play a big role... In this case of testing, only the average FPS was taken.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080
At a resolution of 1920x1080 at maximum settings, video cards of the Radeon HD 5750 or GeForce GTS 450 level showed an acceptable FPS.
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560x1600
At a resolution of 2560x1600 at maximum settings, video cards of the level again showed an acceptable FPS indicator Radeon HD 5750 or GeForce GTS 450. Even DirectX 11 turned out to be powerless in this case against modern video cards...
VRAM test |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200.
Testing at maximum memory quality settings GPU
Optimal amount of video memory usage for Project Giana Demo is its quantity in size 512 MB and above. For ultra-high resolutions you will need about 700 megabytes.
CPU test |
We tested the processor dependence on 12 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was conducted in places where the video card is of minimal importance for the game and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1024x768 with minimum graphics quality settings.
Testing at minimum quality settings 1024x768
In terms of processor dependence Project Giana Demo is very adequate and does not load practically anything at the moment.
RAM test |
Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the task manager Windows. The test was conducted on the base configuration of Core i 7 3930K@4.8 GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.
Testing at various quality settings
As we can see, with different quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Project Giana Demo is at the 200 megabyte level. Thus, for a comfortable game you need to have minimum 1-x GB of RAM installed in your PC is quite modest by modern standards.
