Metro Redux is a re-release of the computer games Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, in which both games were remastered. The release is scheduled for August 29, 2014 for a personal computer, Xbox One and PS4 game consoles. Both classic boxed and digital copies of the publication will be available for sale. There will also be an opportunity to purchase each of the games separately. 

Players who previously purchased Metro 2033 or Metro: Last Light on Steam will be able to get Metro Redux with a 50% discount.

THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

Metro Last Light Redux is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by the developers and will not receive support.

Game engine 

Metro Last Light Redux was developed on a modified version of the 4A Engine, which was used in Metro Last Light and Metro2033. Among the improvements, more advanced AI and optimization of the graphics engine should be noted. The engine was developed in Ukraine by a group of people who were fired (according to another version, they voluntarily left) from the GSC Game World company a year before the release of STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.

 4A Engine

First of all, these are Oles Shishkovtsov and Alexander Maksimchuk, who worked as programmers on the development of the X-Ray engine used in the STALKER series of computer games. The engine was originally designed to run on personal computers, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, the PlayStation 2033 version of Metro 3 was not released. Shishkovtsov and his colleagues left during the development of STALKER due to the fact that X-Ray was “incapable of supporting multi-threading, had a weak and poorly functioning network model and simply terrible resource and memory management, which does not allow any type of data streaming and just level its capabilities are not suitable for 'next-gen' consoles" and also had "terrible text scripting", which, according to Oles himself, led to delays in the original game.

  GAME 3

The Metro 2033 game demonstrated a pretty good implementation of volumetric fog, double precision in PhysX calculations, object blur, subsurface breaking for coverage shaders, parallax mapping for all surfaces and high geometric detail with not too resource-intensive LOD objects. Thanks to the use of PhysX, the engine received many features, for example, destructible environments, simulation of bends on clothing, waves on water and other elements that are completely influenced by the environment. The sound part of the engine has support for 3D positioning, creating the impression of space and the location of the sound source.

In this section of our review, we will directly compare the graphics quality in Metro Last Light and Metro Last Light Redux. Below are comparative screenshots of both games:

The higher brightness in Metro Last Light Redux is immediately noticeable, which allows you to better see game details and locations. More significant changes are almost impossible to discern. Below is a comparison video from our previous review:

General visual design and game physics

According to the developers, the visual part has been improved in Metro Redux: advanced lighting, dynamic weather, more detailed characters with improved animation, more dynamic destruction and improved particle effects have appeared. Improved graphics overall.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment, which is relevant for both copies of the games:   

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 with the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Metro Last Light. Tests were carried out without anti-aliasing and with activated SSAA 2X at separate screen sizes of 1920x1080 and 2560x1600. For the correct operation of SLI and AMD CrossFireX on Metro Last Light Redux, the profiles of those from the original Metro Last Light were forcibly activated. The test was carried out in the game itself, since it is not currently active in Metro Last Light Redux.

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.

The recommended amount of video memory usage for a resolution of 1920x1080 will be 1024 MB of video memory, for a resolution of 2560x1600 - 1280 MB of video memory and for a resolution of 3840x2160 about 2048 MB of video memory.

We tested processor dependence on 15 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.

Metro Last Light Redux is already capable of supporting up to 12 computing threads, and can fully utilize almost 8 cores. 

RAM test

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 3970X@4.9 GHz with 16GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. The entire used operational memory was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).

On a 4GB system, Metro Last Light consumes about 1.5GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 1.7 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, the total memory consumption was almost 2.5 gigabytes.

On a 4GB system, Metro Last Light Redux consumes about 1.6GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 1.9 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, the total memory consumption was almost 2.7 gigabytes.     

From the above review we can conclude: the game has become lighter and, as a result, playing has become more interesting and comfortable. Among the optimizations, it is worth noting the improvement in processor performance and performance of NVIDIA video cards. AMD video cards in Metro Last Light Redux showed a slight drop in performance, which indicates that the game needs optimization in terms of driver improvements.

NikitaWhere have I already seen slightly higher numbers? :-? :lol: from these screenshots I see: they took DDR3 chips, reduced the voltage, increased the timings and frequency and called them DDR4. I think it’s a shame they didn’t make the new PCs compatible with DDR3 and the old platform, there would have been more benefits. although... first of all, they naturally thought about their own benefit. The developers of motherboards and memory were given work and received a percentage from it. Our problems are beyond their reach. loony01I didn't play. I watched the video, it’s a humorous game. :-) It never seemed to be easy before. I’d rather go through cryostasis one more time, it’s too bad. :-)
