Well, after the demonstration of Metro Exodus at E3 2017, many people’s mouths were already watering and in their rosy dreams they had already started playing the future new product with the highest quality of the game on a video adapter of a near-average, or near-top level...
Let’s bring users down to earth a little and present you with testing of the 2010 game, along with the updated 2014 version.
THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
SUPPORTED OS AND GRAPHICS API |
Metro 2033/Metro 2033 Redux are supported Windows Vista/7/8 and Windows 10.
The priority and main graphics API for Metro 2033/Metro 2033 Redux is DirectX 11.
GAME ENGINE |
Metro 2033 Redux was developed on a modified version of the 4A Engine, which was used in Metro Last Light and Metro2033. Among the improvements, more advanced AI and optimization of the graphics engine should be noted. The engine was developed in Ukraine by a group of people who were fired (according to another version, they voluntarily left) from the GSC Game World company a year before the release of STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.
First of all, these are Oles Shishkovtsov and Alexander Maksimchuk, who worked as programmers on the development of the X-Ray engine used in the STALKER series of computer games. The engine was originally designed to run on personal computers, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, the PlayStation 2033 version of Metro 3 was not released. Shishkovtsov and his colleagues left during the development of STALKER due to the fact that X-Ray was “incapable of supporting multi-threading, had a weak and poorly functioning network model and simply terrible resource and memory management, which does not allow any type of data streaming and just level its capabilities are not suitable for 'next-gen' consoles" and also had "terrible text scripting", which, according to Oles himself, led to delays in the original game.
The Metro 2033 game demonstrated a pretty good implementation of volumetric fog, double precision in PhysX calculations, object blur, subsurface breaking for coverage shaders, parallax mapping for all surfaces and high geometric detail with not too resource-intensive LOD objects. Thanks to the use of PhysX, the engine received many features, for example, destructible environments, simulation of bends on clothing, waves on water and other elements that are completely influenced by the environment. The sound part of the engine has support for 3D positioning, creating the impression of space and the location of the sound source.
Comparison of Metro 2033 and Metro 2033 Redux |
The difference is visible very clearly, but it is more determined by the user’s preference for the style of the game. We have previously made a comparative video review and will present it again below:

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 with maximum graphics quality settings (the absolute maximum for both games). AMD CrossFireX and SLI are currently perfectly supported by the game. The benchmark was not taken as a test, since the original version has compatibility problems on some configurations.
TEST GPU |
In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected).

VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on the results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with different anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the chart at the request of the reader.
