Ruins are all that remains of Chicago. No one knows why the disaster struck the city. For the survivors - including the main character - another question is relevant: what to do in the current situation? According to the plot of I Am Alive, players will play the role of a guy named Adam Collins, who will have to find his wife and daughter, who went missing after the disaster. 

A terrible cataclysm destroyed not only the protagonist’s hometown, but also his entire life. Having set off on a dangerous journey in search of his relatives, Adam’s path, in addition to unfriendly nature and impassable ruins, will not always be friendly survivors, but the key factors will be the need for resources and endurance.

THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

I Am Alive is supported by the major Windows operating systems, which include XP, Vista and Windows 7. Other operating systems are not currently supported by the developers and are unlikely to receive support.

The priority and main graphics API, both for consoles and for the PC version, is DirectX 9.

Game engine 

The game engine for I Am Alive is the LEAD engine. LEAD engine is a game engine developed for internal use by Ubisoft. The first project based on this engine was the computer game Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, created by the Canadian division of the main company, Ubisoft Montreal, and released on April 13, 2010.

LEAD is based on another game engine from the company, internally called SCX. "SCX" is a modified version of "Unreal Engine 2.5". This engine was used in the games "Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory" and "Splinter Cell: Double Agent". Specialized sites usually labeled these games as "based on (modified) Unreal Engine 2". It is noteworthy that when creating LEAD, for unknown reasons, improvements to the SCX engine made for the game Double Agent were not used.

The first game created on the LEAD engine, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, was released on April 13, 2010 on the Xbox 360 game console and on April 27, 2010 on the PC. The PC version was ported from the Xbox 360. A number of improvements have been implemented: shadow resolution has been increased, sixteen-fold anti-aliasing with anisotropic filtering is supported, the maximum screen resolution has been raised to 2560x1440 pixels. Some sites in published reviews of the game mentioned the presence of software flaws in the PC version, as well as insufficient optimization.

The main difference from its predecessor, the SCX engine, which, in turn, is based on Unreal Engine 2.5, is a significantly modified graphics engine - a component of the game engine that is responsible for rendering (output) images. In addition, optimization was carried out for operation on multi-core processors, the Havok physics engine was built in, and support for the Xbox 360 game console was added. The engine supports both open and closed locations.

Advanced Game Settings

I Am Alive has a fairly wide range of graphic settings, even though the game is a product of a complete console port. We may, at our discretion, set any graphic settings in any order and any configuration. They didn’t even forget NVIDIA’s 16X anti-aliasing - we haven’t heard anything about it for a long time.

As we can see, the graphics are almost identical at different quality settings.

General visual design and game physics

Of course, we shouldn’t forget that, firstly, the game was developed on Unreal Engine 2.5, so we shouldn’t expect any frills in terms of any super-technological innovations, and secondly, I Am Alive is the result of a 100% console porting, so we should thank the developers , because the game has a fairly wide range of graphic settings.

To be honest, the game did not impress me. I Am Alive is made in a gray, washed-out post-apocalyptic style, which is intended not so much to create a harsh atmosphere as to hide all the gaps in the graphical component. All this can be seen from the screenshots we provided, so there is no point in commenting on anything.

GPU test

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average FPS was taken as a performance indicator. Below is a video of a test segment for video cards:  

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with ultra-high graphics quality settings I Am Alive. SLI and CrossFireX are not fully supported by the game at the moment, and CrossFireX even unfortunately goes into the negative... The game has an internal FPS limit of 60 frames.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1680x1050

At a resolution of 1680x1050 at maximum settings, an acceptable minimum FPS was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 5750 or GeForce level GTS 450The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTX 560 Ti and higher.

Testing at maximum quality settings 1920x1080

At a resolution of 1920x1080 at maximum settings, video cards of the Radeon HD 7750 or GeForce GTX 550 Ti level showed an acceptable FPS. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 6790 or GeForce GTX 460 SE and higher.

Testing at maximum quality settings 2560x1600

At a resolution of 2560x1600 at maximum settings, video cards of the Radeon HD 5850 or GeForce GTX 470 level again showed an acceptable FPS. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GTX 480 and higher. 

VRAM test

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200.

Testing at maximum memory GPU quality settings

The optimal amount of video memory for I Am Alive is 1024 MB or higher. For ultra-high resolutions you will need about 1,5 gigabytes.

CPU test

We tested processor dependence on 12 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1024x768 with maximum graphics quality settings. Antialiasing has been disabled.

I Am Alive feels great on all of our tested processor models. The minimum FPS did not drop below 40 frames.

RAM test

Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows task manager. The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 3930K@4.8 GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.

As we can see, with different quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in I Am Alive is at the same level of 540 megabytes. Thus, for a comfortable game you need to have minimum 1.5 GB of RAM installed in your PC.

FPS is like crap, and the game is console shit Poor consoles don't support anything other than UE3. This fucking engine is already 5 years old, and all the games are still being made on it.
Why did consoles still use the RAGE engine? True, at such a low level of the graphs, as it would look on a PC with settings close to minimum!!! And UE3, by the way, is already in its 7th year, the relevance of its use, in my opinion, passed back in 2009, but fortunately the console, as you said, is all my fault!

How long will they patch it up and make it better? A large percentage of upcoming multi-platform games are made on this engine, which is why they are all similar to each other , only the plots are different. Apparently, until new consoles come out, they will continue to churn out this crap. I read on one site that the developers of the new Xbox have some problems with the processor and they won’t release it before 2014, so expect more and more games on UE3.
