GAME ENGINE

The game was developed on a modified game engine Glacier Engine 2. Glacier Engine is a game engine developed by the Danish company IO Interactive for use in its own projects. There are two generations of this technology.

Work on the first generation of the engine began back in 1994, and since then, over the course of several years, the technology has been subject to constant refinements and improvements. The first game that was based on this technology was Hitman: Codename 47 in 2000; at the same time, the last one, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, was released in 2010.

Hitman 47

For the game Hitman: Absolution (2012), a new generation version of the engine was developed - Glacier Engine 2. The first generation Glacier engine contains several tools necessary for development: Visual Scene Editor and Visual Scene Player for working with cut scenes, a level editor, several tools for working with textures, objects and sound, as well as its own plugins for 3ds Max, Adobe Photoshop and Pro Tools.

Basic physics allows you to simulate the behavior of vehicles, collisions, and falling objects. In later projects on the Glacier engine, the company already abandoned the use of its own physics engine, integrating the commercial Havok physics engine.

Hitman Absolution

To work with light, it supports lightmaps (shadow maps), per-pixel and vertex lighting, volumetric rays, and pre-rendered (or displayed in real time) lights and shadows. It also supports MIP and bump texturing, object LOD, inverse kinematics, and frame-by-frame and skeletal animation.

There is support for a number of graphic post-effects, including light flares, motion blur and depth of field. Traditionally for engines of its time, there was the ability to create various weather effects (for example, fog or rain) using a particle system - it also controls some other effects. Shader support allows you to implement effects such as water with waves, light refractions and reflections.

Glacier's built-in audio engine supports streaming or dynamic level music playback and acoustic effects for audio created using the A3D or EAX engine.

The file storage system is based on the ZIP format, which makes it easier to access archives of game data. Starting with the second generation, Glacier 2, the engine was significantly redesigned.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using the Action! program. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions of the Radeon RX 480 or GeForce GTX 980 level.

When resolved 2560x1440 average FPS of 25 frames showed level video cards Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 960. Minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 970. A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be achieved by level solutions Radeon RX Vega 56 or GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on the results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with different anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the schedule at the request of the reader.

When using video cards NVIDIA an acceptable figure of at least 25 frames was shown by the FX 6300 or Core i 3 2100 processors, and an average FPS of at least 60 frames can be achieved by solutions of the level Core i 5 7600.   

When using video cards AMD an acceptable figure of at least 25 frames was shown by the FX 6300 or Core i 3 2100 processors, and an average FPS of at least 60 frames can be achieved by solutions of the level Core i 7 8700.

RAM TEST

As it turned out, instead of the required 4 GB of video memory there was, roughly speaking, 3,5 GB. The last 500 MB of video memory worked very slowly (by ~80%). Moreover, the GPU characteristics have also been “embellished”. The specifications listed 2 MB of L2 cache, but there was 1,75 MB, and there were also 64 ROP blocks, but there were 56.
