This time, video card tests were carried out in two modes with separate screen sizes of 1280x1024 and 1920x1080. In the first mode, video cards were tested using 512 megabytes of video memory, and in the second, 896. Why 896, you ask? The answer is simple - cards of the GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce GTX 275 series are currently very common, which are currently the backbone of Nvidia's upper price niche. But as fate would have it, they only received 896 megabytes of video memory. And as in the case of Radeon video cards, which have a maximum of only 8x anti-aliasing, we decided to equalize their chances.

Both episodes have different test packages. To test video cards, we considered it necessary to use a test from The Ballad of Gay Tony, which is oversaturated with explosions and action...

When using 512 MB cards, all settings were set to ultra, except texture quality, which was set to medium, and shadow quality, which was set to high quality. The draw distance in this case was set to 60.

In this case, a more or less acceptable picture can be shown by cards of the GeForce GTS 250 and Radeon HD 4870 level. As it turns out, the game, in addition to the central processor, also has immodest demands on the performance of your video system.

When using cards with 896 megabytes of video memory and higher, absolutely all settings were set to ultra, but the drawing distance in this case was only 20.

All settings were cranked up when using a Radeon HD 5870 card on ultra and the rendering distance in this case was 63. Why not less, you ask? Indeed, in the case of measuring processor dependence in all games, the settings are reset to a minimum so as not to limit the potential of the CPU. But here the situation is different - calculations of the volume of textures and the level of detail in Grand Theft Auto 4 partially fall on the shoulders of the central processor, and the higher their value, the heavier the load on the CPU.

This is where the most interesting thing turns out to be revealed to us. Two cores of our CPU overclocked to 4,2 show much better results than the unoverclocked 4 to 2,83. Of course, it cannot be denied that 4 cores of 4,2 each work better than 2 at the same frequency (a difference of several percent is also a result!). But whatever one may say at the moment, for Grand Theft Auto 4: Episodes From Liberty City it is better to take a good dual-core processor, overclock it to a frequency of over 4 GHz and have much greater performance than using 4 cores in nominal mode.

Conclusion: Grand Theft Auto 4: Episodes From Liberty City is a completely independent and good project, built on the basis of Grand Theft Auto 4. But for the full thrill of the sensation, you will need solid overclocking skills and the availability of top-end video cards...
