Evolve is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer game developed by the American company Turtle Rock Studios. Evolve is a sci-fi co-op shooter that pits a team of four player “hunters” against a solo player controlling an alien monster. Over the course of the match, the beast grows and “evolves”, becoming stronger and more dangerous.  

THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

Evolve is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by the developers.

Game engine 

The technical basis of the Evolve project was the cross-platform CryEngine engine. This is a powerful set of tools that works on all major platforms and allows the developer to focus on the game and not bother with the technical part. The CryEngine was used to create groundbreaking trilogies such as Crysis and Ryse.

CryEngine 3 was officially announced on March 11, 2009, and the official release of the engine took place on October 14, 2009. The first game for which the use of CryEngine 3 was announced is the first-person shooter Crysis 2 from Crytek. At the end of March 2010, in an interview with GameReactor magazine, Cevat Yerli said that developers from Crytek had to face a number of problems when developing CryEngine 3 for consoles: “The most difficult thing was the process of scaling CryEngine 3 for consoles while maintaining picture quality and the proper level of performance. Of course, there were challenges, but we are very proud that our team was able to overcome them.”

Shaders in CryEngine 3 are written once in a high-level programming language, and then automatically compiled for each platform. Shader output is optimized through artist settings and for the XNUMXD environment in which the shader will be used. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to create effects such as the “invisibility effect”, wet, dirty and frozen surfaces, which can be “layered” on top of each other and combined with other shaders that simulate effects such as metal, glass and others.

CryEngine 3 supports real-time per-pixel lighting, reflections, refractions, volumetric heat effects and animated textures to simulate windows, bullet holes, surfaces with sun glare and many other effects. CryEngine 3 shaders use a unified shader architecture that has been available since Direct3D 10.

"Ubershader" is a single shader program with many features: from one to four lights, light types, specular cubemaps, fog, detailed textures, normal maps, specular textures, etc. Millions of Ubershader combinations can be generated. Ubershader uses dynamic branching, splitting into multiple passes, reducing combinations, and accepting options with less functionality and lower performance requirements. Uses asynchronous shader compilation and a distributed task system to compile the shader cache.

Evolve looks good in 4K, but the lack of 4K textures makes itself felt.

The most optimal anti-aliasing mode is SMAA. Basically, the activation of any anti-aliasing practically does not appear in the game.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:    

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Evolve. SLI received support in the recent driver release, but AMD CrossFireX is not currently supported by the game. It's worth noting that we tested over the same test period, and as you'll see below, the systems' performance decreased slightly.

With these settings an acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon R7 260X or GeForce GTX 750 Ti level.

With these settings An acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon R9 270 or GeForce GTX 680 level. The optimal solution would be video cards level Radeon HD 7950 or GeForce GTX 960.

With these settings, video cards of the Radeon R9 290 or GeForce GTX 980 level showed an acceptable FPS. The optimal solution would be video cards GeForce GTX 780 SLI level and higher.

 

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.

The recommended amount of video memory usage for a resolution of 1920x1080 will be 3076 MB of video memory, for a resolution of 2560x1600 - 3076 MB of video memory, and for a resolution of 3840x2160 about 4096 MB of video memory.

We tested processor dependence on 16 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.

The CPU performance in the game is simply amazing. If the game has 4 or 16 threads, then all is normal, but if 6,8, or 12, then the matter is limited to 50-55 FPS. Either it’s our fault, or it’s a problem with the game itself, but without a doubt, the developers should pay attention to this problem.

The game can support up to 6 computing threads, but as we know, only 4 computing threads are useful in the game.

RAM test

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 5960X@4.6 GHz with 16GB DDR4 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. The entire used operational memory was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).

As we can see, with various quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Evolve is at the level of 1.6 gigabytes.

On a 6GB system, Evolve consumes about 3.8GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 4 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, the total memory consumption was almost 4.5 gigabytes. And with 32 gigabytes of RAM, the system consumes 5.2 gigabytes of RAM.

I am once again amazed by the crookedness of the developers. How did they manage to make the CryEngine consume 4 gigabytes of video memory in FullHD??? Why does Crysis 3 in FullHD consume 1,5 gigs of video memory, and this creation of crooked hands consumes 4 gigs??? This is how you had to ruin the engine??? Are they specially pouring textures into BMP? Or could the graphics in Crysis3 be much worse??
On purpose, this is not the first game I’ve seen where the graphics are a gigabyte long and consumes 3-4, someone just needs to be slapped in the neck for this. If in GTA 5 it will consume more than 2 (and on the box 360 it pulls a 720p picture, let me remind you, it fits into 256 megabytes), then thank you to say to NVIDIA then, they decided to add a damn thing there and will spoil it a little like all the time..

vanosIt’s more likely that they simply optimized it for i3, i5. They probably have a 5960x on the studio one, they made the game on it. :-)
