Borderlands 2 builds on the same gameplay elements as its predecessor. It is a first-person shooter that incorporates RPG-style character development, leading Gearbox to call the game an "RPG shooter." At the beginning of the game, the player can choose one of four characters, each of which has a unique skill and affinity for a particular type of weapon.

After this, the player receives tasks from non-player characters or message boards. For completing each task, the player receives a reward in the form of money, experience points, and sometimes receives an item. The player receives experience points for killing enemies and completing in-game achievements, such as getting a certain number of kills with any type of weapon.

As in the first game, there are 4 characters to choose from, but different ones. One of them is Salvador, nicknamed “Schizostrel,” who, in terms of his abilities, replaced Brick from the first part. The second character is a siren named Maya, similar to Lilith from the first game, but with a different ability - Phase Lock. The remaining characters are the soldier Axton, who relies on turrets like Roland, and the assassin Zero, with the ability to create a double of himself and become invisible for a short time, during which he can critically hit an enemy with his sword, and got his name because of the numbers that appear zero after each kill.

THE GRAFICAL PART

Game engine 

Borderlands 2 is based on a modified Unreal Engine 3. UE3 was designed with personal computers using modern rendering systems (DirectX 9/10 and OpenGL 2/3) and next-generation consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) in mind. Due to the widespread use of multiprocessor systems, the engine uses two parallel main threads - the main thread (responsible primarily for gameplay) and the rendering thread. In addition to the two main threads, secondary threads can be called, which perform one-time tasks. There is now support for multi-threaded dynamic data loading (streaming), for example, loading a “location” directly while moving around it in order to save resources.

The updated graphics engine supports most modern technologies, including HDR, per-pixel lighting, dynamic shadows, shader model 4, geometry shaders. The graphics pipeline itself was transferred to the control of shaders. The Karma physics subsystem was abandoned in favor of another called PhysX from AGEIA. Later, AGEIA released a set of additional libraries for the game, allowing you to use all the capabilities of the physical system (such as the effect of “liquid” or fabric). The FaceFX mechanism is responsible for the animation of the characters' faces. Updated EAX version to 5th. Added SpeedTree support for tree generation. Borderlands 2's physics engine uses PhysX, a proprietary middleware, cross-platform physics engine for simulating a range of physics phenomena, and a development kit (SDK) based on it. Originally developed by Ageia for its PhysX physical processor. After Ageia was acquired by nVidia, the engine became the property of nVidia, which continues its further development. nVidia adapted the engine to accelerate physical calculations on its graphics chips with CUDA architecture. PhysX can also perform calculations using a conventional processor.

In nVidia graphics drivers version 186, the ability to work together between two graphics cards with GPUs from different manufacturers (AMD and nVidia) was blocked. Thus, if previously it was possible to separate calculations across different graphics cards (for example, a card with an nVidia processor can calculate game physics, and a card with an AMD processor can render images), then from version 186, if a GPU from another manufacturer is detected in the system (even integrated into the chipset), then this feature is blocked. In addition, the new version of the PhysX engine does not support specialized PhysX physics accelerators (PPUs) developed by Ageia if a non-NVIDIA GPU is detected in the system.

NVIDIA FXAA is a popular anti-aliasing technology that uses proximity to remove jagged edges from straight surfaces in games. All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:    

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Borderlands 2. The test was carried out in modes with PhysX Low and PhysX High. WITH PhysX High tested only video cards NVIDIA, since in case of their absence, physics level settings in the graphic menu remain inactive. Multi-chip configurations from NVIDIA and AMD are optimized at the driver level and show excellent scalability.

NVIDIA has done an impressive job of optimizing the game for its products - its video cards can provide the best gaming experience. As you can see from this testing, the resource intensity of Borderlands 2 using PhysX does not increase as critically as in previous games using this technology. In this regard, even owners of middle-class NVIDIA video cards of the previous generation will be able to ensure quite comfortable playability using high-quality physical effects. As we can see, the second GPU for physics acceleration GEDORCE GTX 690 is loaded up to 12%, and GeForce GTX 590 - up to 19%. From this we can conclude that the optimal individual video cards for accelerating physics can be budget solutions, starting from the level GeForce 8800GTS/9600 GT, GeForce GT 240, GeForce GT 430/440, GeForce GT 630 and higher.

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 2560x1600.

The optimal amount of video memory for Borderlands 2 is 500-700 MB. for resolutions with PhysX Low, and about 600-800 megabytes for PhysX High.

We tested processor dependence on 12 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings. At the request of our readers, our test has been revised. AMD Phenom II processors were retested on a test configuration from AMD Bulldozer on the 990FX platform. As a result of these works, it turned out that AMD Phenom II work stably with 4 and 6 cores active. Apparently the problem lies in poor optimization by developers for different AMD platforms. Below we have provided a comparison of the 990FX platform and AMD 785G (which was provided by AMD as standard for Phenom II tests):

As we can see, the change of platform has had a very positive effect. In fact, this is the first game where we encountered such a problem. Judging by the reviews, this problem also occurs for some users. We cannot judge which platforms are subject to such negative effects and whether this depends on a particular manufacturer. We hope the upcoming patches will fix this problem.

We also decided to perform a test with maximum physics effects, accelerated by the CPU. Since switching physics is blocked when using third-party NVIDIA equipment, we took the simple route and simply replaced the test configs of the game’s graphics settings. The test was a combination of video and processor tests. Just like for the processor test, we chose the most resource-intensive place for them - the view above the settlement, aggravating the performance by using physical fragments from shots. As we can see, the difference between using two and four cores becomes more significant and only four-core models will allow you to enjoy the gameplay to a greater extent.

Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows task manager. The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 3930K@4.8 GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed video memory.
